5 Design Tricks That Saves You Hours of Cleaning!
What with our work and personal commitments, we’re left with just a few precious hours each day, and we’re sure you wouldn’t want to spend your leisure time on chores.
So, if you want to maximise your down time and lessen your domestic load, start with these handy design tricks for a low maintenance home!
1. Less Grout, Less Work
Many homeowners opt for tiles as their choice of flooring, but we’d advise against this if you don’t want to spend hours on your knees, scrubbing at grout between your tiles. Not only that, but grout also turns black over time, affecting the aesthetics of your home with its unsightly discolouration.
To avoid the laborious task of scrubbing grout off your floor, go for flooring materials such as vinyl, parquet and wood-effect laminates. These materials require minimal gaps or joint lines for grout to form, and are much easier to clean- simply use a broom or a damp mop.
If you prefer tiles in areas such as your bathroom, explore the option of larger tiles, which will minimise areas for grout to form. Otherwise, cement screed with waterproof sealing is a great option for your home as well.
2. Choose the “Right” Colour
Selecting colours for your home is no longer just a matter of aesthetics. Sure, the colour and finish of your walls can give your space a completely different vibe, but the right type of paint can also save you time on cleaning.
Painting your walls with washable paint is a great way to maintain the pristine condition of your walls with minimal effort. Dirt and stains come off easily with a wet rag. But, unless you want to spend your days with a wet rag permanently in your hand, hide dirty marks with darker neutrals like greys, or rich tones like navy and black. Or, go with bigger tiles / laminates that are easy to clean.

3. Flush Furniture to Walls
Dirt can only settle if you give it someplace to settle on. Reduce the amount of dusting you have to do by asking your interior designer to flush all built-in furniture like wardrobes and TV consoles to the walls and floors. Make sure that your built-ins come with doors to keep things dust-free on the inside too!
With this solution, you no longer have to dust the tops of cabinets or sweep any stray litter out from underneath the TV console! Your back and knees will also thank you in the long run.
4. Go for Engineered Quartz/Stainless Steel Kitchen Countertops
Like washable paints for your walls, select a material in your kitchen that’s easy to clean. Engineered quartz, known for its heavy-duty properties, is a great choice. Unlike natural stones like marble or soapstone, you can scrub it with any cleaning agent and it’ll still come out looking brand new- no scratches, no stains.
Another low-maintenance alternative is stainless steel kitchen countertops. Stainless steel is resistant towards stains, dirt and bacteria, and its smooth surface makes it easy for you to wipe dirt off in one fell swoop. However, it isn’t scratch-resistant, choose a brushed metal finish for less obvious scratch marks.

5. Stain-proof your Home
So you’ve just gotten your brand new sofa, and your little nephew has just spilled juice all over the fabric seat. What a disaster!
Fabrics are ticking time bombs. They trap dust easily, are susceptible to stains and are notoriously difficult to clean. Unless you plan to keep the protective plastic covering on your furniture, it’s best to choose stain-resistant materials. Leather can be the perfect choice for you. Any spills or dust can be easily wiped off.
That’s not to say that you can’t have any fabric in your home. If you prefer fabric, we suggest that you take precautions. Applying a stain-resistant treatment like Scotchgard can save you from rubbing away at stubborn stains in the future; or opt for those with removable seat covers.
There you go, you’ve got a home that’s practically stain and dust-proof!
