Designer Spotlight: Rezt & Relax Interior

As a Singapore Quality Brand, Rezt & Relax Interior knows better than to rest on its laurels. Its founders, Wilson Teh and John Foo, constantly work to maintain their reputation as one of the best in the industry by keeping a firm hand on their designers.

Not many interior designers can boast of signing 350 – 400 contracts in a year – that is different for Rezt & Relax Interior. But before you think that it is all work and no play for them, they do take time aside to unwind with their team and forge stronger camaraderie with them during regular team dinners. Taking some time out of his busy schedule, we had a chat with Wilson who shares with us about the importance of quality control in his firm.

Qanvast: Rezt & Relax Interior is an established homegrown company. How do you upkeep the quality of the service that your designers provide?

Wilson (W): We are on our 16th year now and things are only looking up for us, thanks to the dedication and hard work of our designers. But work motivation is not enough to make a successful company. Certain level of rigid standards must be followed. As we have 82 staff in the company, we cannot always keep our eyes on our designers at work so each designer is obligated to ask their homeowner to fill up a feedback form at the end of every project, which will then be reviewed by the management. This way, we can truly understand how our designers have performed.

Qanvast: What is your firm’s culture like?

W: We have a team of young designers and having these youngsters brings a lot of energy and fun to the company. Some get so close to each other that they bond outside of work with some groups even taking trips overseas together.

Qanvast: That’s good to hear. What about your work management style?

W: My business partner, John Foo, and I spent an awful lot of energy and many years of perseverance to get to where we are today and that is why we see to it that we are firm in demanding our designers to deliver only quality service at all times when carrying out work. No excuses.

John and I complement each other well. He would train the designers on technicalities like project management etc, while I hone in on the soft skills like the attitude of the designers.

Service to us is really important and we make sure to instill that in our designers. We are very particular towards how responsive the designers are towards the homeowners and we set a certain standard as to when should the designer get back to the homeowner.

Qanvast: What challenges do you face in today’s interior design landscape?

W: Firstly as a business owner, it's probably the fact that there has been a huge increase in interior design firms being put up last year. And that only means more competition.

Secondly, homeowners fall for these fly-by-night interior design firms that rob them of their hard-earned money time and time again. These incidents become as much of a lesson to them as it is to the industry players and that is why we did not give a second thought about getting the CaseTrust-RCMA accreditation to provide assurance to our customers. We have done a great deal of branding effort that truly sets ourselves apart from the rest and we have every intention of retaining a firm hold on our market share.

We also offer lifetime warranty on the renovation works we provide, and are particularly selective on the items we choose. Take for example, we don't use glass lamps in our works for safety purposes. On top of that, we also perform an assessment on the works in each home every five years.

Qanvast: What is the most important mindset that homeowners should adopt when it comes to planning their renovation?

W: It’s important to be realistic between designing your home and your budgeting. I have seen so many homeowners who want so much to be done in their house and expect to pay so little. Along with the promise of quality, quantity comes at a price too.
