Designer Spotlight: Voilà Design
Four years ago, interior designer Jason Ng came out on his own with a vision to create magical homes that are full of surprises. Hence, he named the company Voilà Design, borrowing from the French word “voilà”, which means to call attention to or to express satisfaction.
“At Voilà, we believe that every home is unique and specially created for the people living in it. No home should be a photocopy of another — your home shouldn’t look like your friend’s or your relative’s,” says Jason.
His insistence to create nothing less than inspiring makeover homes has paid off with a loyal following of customers and the opening of a second branch at United Square in 2015. He shares with Qanvast how he does it.
Honesty Is The Best Policy
Jason (J): “Voilà wants honest relationships with all our customers, which is why we don’t offer packages. Instead, when we provide a quotation, everything is itemised right down to the individual measurements. There are no hidden costs, unlike ‘packages’ which usually leads to additional charges later on.”
Whole New Perspective
J: “Did you know that Voilà was the pioneer of the black-framed glass partitions that you see in many living rooms these days? A couple of years back when the half-wall glass partitions were popular, my team experimented with a black frame to add contrast. Turns out, the black frame added interest and depth, and made the room more spacious. That became one of our signature looks.”
On A Personal Level
J: “Every one of my ID will do a handover checklist with the owner towards the end of the renovation. The owner can write down any problem spots, and it’s the ID’s job to rectify it. To ensure quality, I always make it a point to do one final check myself before we wrap up each project.
Voilà also offers a two-year warranty period because we understand that sometimes problems only arise after the homeowners have moved in. We also make it a point to follow up with house visits once the projects are completed – we are probably the only firm that does so – to conduct a short survey with the homeowner on their renovation experience.”
It’s A Material World
J: “We may live in cookie-cutter homes, but every flat is unique, and materials all come in different qualities and costs. You must understand that when there’s a change in material or size, there will be a change in price.
If someone spends $80,000 on their renovation with marble flooring, you can’t say you want that same marble floor for only $60,000. An Hermès-looking home will come with an Hermès-type of price – quality comes at a premium.”
