Home of the Month: Laid-Back Minimalism

December 27, 2016

Minimalist homes tend to evoke an air of restraint; However, this month’s compact, 3-room HDB unit definitely takes the cake in its ability to blend clean austerity with laid-back cosiness. How did interior firm Lemonfridge Studio manage to create an illusion of space while ensuring a homely, lived-in vibe? We break down their design process into four easy steps.

Home of the Month: Laid-Back Minimalism

Step One: Start with a Clean Slate

It is always important to set the canvas for your interior masterpiece. A key ingredient in any minimalist home, white is known to make spaces look bigger. In this case, walls and ceilings were given little to no embellishment, and white paint is applied throughout for a bare, cavernous feel. To avoid seeming too clinical, cement screed floors were then used for contrast and a gritty, unfinished look.

Step Two: Stay Close To Walls

Arranging individual furniture around isn’t a good idea when you don’t have much room to work with. Instead, clear the way for more walking space by building fixtures by the surrounding walls. Case in point: The home’s built-in shoe cabinet, galley-style kitchen layout and the day-bed, which extends throughout the living area and acts as additional seating for guests.

Step Three: Pick A Secondary Theme

An all-white interior may seem achingly stylish, but let’s be honest - it reminds us of a padded cell. Add dimension to your home by selecting a key secondary material or texture. From pale ash to sun-bleached timber, wooden furniture and fittings in various finishes give off a laid-back, rustic feel to this space. It also serves as a complement to the flat’s predominantly white backdrop, adding cosiness and coherence to the home’s overall aesthetic.

Step Four: Throw in Some Knick Knacks (Or A Furry Friend!)

A home would be tad boring without a bit of clutter and colour! For a fetching, homespun look, complete your interiors with vibrant accessories and lush, indoor plants. Here, multicoloured cushions and an eye-catching tapestry double as visual focal points. Another instant fixer-upper for a homely atmosphere? Coming back home to your favourite furry friends will surely warm any space up!
