Before you whizz past, we’ll briefly take you through three basic types of lighting to know, each of which has a different purpose.
Ambient/mood lighting provides the general lighting for a room and comes in various forms, like cove lights, wall-mounted fixtures and floor lamps.
Task lighting provides focused lighting that reduces eye strain and helps with tasks like cooking, reading or sewing. Under-cabinet lighting and track lights are two such types.
Accent lighting meanwhile is a more decorative type of light that can be used to spotlight objects or special features (a feature wall or drapery, for example). Downlights/recessed lighting and wall sconces are typically used for this purpose.
