Although it is easy to fill your home with small plants, nothing makes a statement or creates more drama like a large indoor plant. They can serve as a focal point, give your interior a resort-like feel, and bring a touch of nature indoors.
The only drawback is that larger plants are more difficult to fit into areas such as the shelf, tables or window sills. If you are struggling to find a suitable place to add large plants to your home, you may find some of these space ideas useful!
1. In the corner of your entryway
Your entryway sets the tone of your home, and displaying a large plant on your entryway is akin to giving your guests a warm, welcoming hug upon arrival.
When choosing what plants you would like to add to your entryway, consider the lighting in the space to ensure its suitable for your plants to flourish in. This Balinese-styled bungalow, for example, has a double void entryway that allows plenty of light to enter through the glass window. Hence, displaying a large Bird of Paradise on the corner of the entryway is a great idea because this type of plant thrives in indirect sunlight. The lush foliage also adds a tropical feel and sets the tone of the rest of the space.
Other tall or large indoor plants that can create a cheerful vibe on your home entrance include Areca palms, Umbrella trees, and Monstera.

2. In your bathroom by the window
When it comes to decorating with plants, bathrooms are often overlooked, but they are actually one of the best environments for many large plants. They can also help to create a magical, spa-like atmosphere in the space.
When placing a plant in your bathroom, keep in mind that humidity and temperature fluctuations (when the bathroom is and isn’t being used respectively) may affect the plant’s development.
In this bathroom, the designer placed large pots of Peace Lilies between the standalone washing counter and windows where they receive plenty of indirect sunlight. The large indoor plants also give the impression that the homeowners are in a tropical spa setting.
Aside from Peace Lilies, other large plants that thrive in humidity include Ferns, Snake plants and Dumb canes.
3. At the corner of your living room
The living room is one of the most popular locations for large indoor plants. They can easily become the focal point of the room, setting the tone for cosy lounging or serving as an excellent conversation starter. Furthermore, because the living room is usually located next to a window, it receives plenty of natural light, making it an ideal location for your large plants to grow.
In this landed home in Penang, the homeowner displayed a large Bird of Paradise next to the living room's sofa, adding a pop of colour and contrast to the otherwise neutral space. The massive plant stands tall among the low furniture, giving the room the illusion of high ceiling. The best thing about this type of plant is that it requires little effort on your part. It only requires a few hours of direct sunlight per day, water every one to two weeks, and a dusting of the leaves every now and then!
Other large plants that can add a pop of verdant colour and lend a tropical jungle-like vibe to your living room include Monstera, Ficus trees and Rubber plants, Fiddle Leaf Figs.
4. In your dining room, near a window
The dining room is another excellent location for displaying and growing large indoor plants. You can have one placed by the window or in a corner of the room. It will give you the feeling of dining in an al fresco setting, making the space look fresh and vibrant as seen in this light-filled condominium in Penang.
The homeowner added an Areca palm next to the window in this dining room, allowing the plant to flourish as it requires plenty of direct sunlight. The plant instantly adds a touch of nature and a subtle hint of colour to an otherwise ordinary space filled with white and light wood tones.
Aside from Areca palms, Umbrella plants, Monstera, Dracaena, and Olive trees are some of the best large plants to have in your dining room.
5. Under or in the middle section of your staircase
Large plants are the best way to transform an awkward, empty space under the staircase into a lively space. Where tables, chairs, or coffee tables may be awkward or too small to fit, large indoor plants of varying heights can help your space look balanced and less empty.
If the space under your stairs is well-lit (unless you are planning to decorate it with artificial plants), consider planting a Rabbit Eye Blueberry tree, as seen in this stunning Scandinavian design home in Dengkil. The planted trees covered in white pebbles and some large rocks give a Zen-like atmosphere which cultivates peace and serenity as soon as the homeowner enters the house.
Aside from under the staircase, you could also consider adding some greenery to your stairwell. This area is ideal for tall, towering houseplants like Peace Lilies, Snake Plants, Ficus, and Silver Satin Pothos because they have more room to grow than in a room with lower ceilings. Take into account this landed home, where a faux Bird of Paradise helps to create a focal point and transform an otherwise boring staircase.
6. In a corner of your reading/study room
The reading or study room is another good place to place large indoor plants. Studies have proven that plants can promote calm in mind which helps you to feel peaceful and concentrate better when reading. In addition, having a large indoor plant in your study or reading room can help to create a visually less cluttered look as compared to displaying a cluster of small potted plants - this is especially important when you need to focus on your tasks!
Depending on how much light your reading or study room receives, large beautiful plants like Ficus (all varieties) and Monstera can be placed on the floor next to your desk or sofa to soften the edges of your furniture or to hide unsightly extension cords. Consider this reading room, where the homeowner positioned a China Doll plant next to the seating area. The touch of nature, not only adds style, but also a cheerful and a sense of serenity to the room.
