In most double-storey residences, the space under the stairs can create an unusual, awkwardly shaped area that can be tricky to decorate or utilise efficiently. However, with some creative imagination, you can transform this often-neglected space into something useful.

Here are some ideas to get you started!

1. Simple Storage

Storage is an obvious way to make full use of the space under your stairs, and it can be incorporated even in the smallest under-the-stairs space. That said, there are a couple of things to keep in mind.

Firstly, it’s best not to overwhelm or crowd the space with too many items, especially if you’re using open shelving. Also, to give a seamless look, rather than to appear as a mere decorative afterthought; the styling should complement the décor in the room.

In this example, the styling follows the rest of the home’s minimalistic vision with simple wooden shelving in a similar grain and colour, as seen elsewhere in the home. The cosy alcove also features small boxes and bottom drawers for storing small items and keeping the space looking tidy.

2. Go for pull-out storage for a clean look

Alternatively, closed storage, like this wall of drawers, can help to create a more clean look.

In this Semi-D, the designer installed custom-made pull-out drawers to make clever use of the dead space near the entrance. It allows the homeowner to store shoes, backpacks, sports equipment and other necessities that would otherwise clutter the entryway. To create a visually cohesive look, the drawers feature a whitewood tone that complements the white walls and tile floors.

3. Create a stylish display

In addition to storage, the extra space under the stairs can also be used as a stylish display area.

This modern living room serves as a wonderful case in point. The area beneath the stairs has been transformed into a backlit display area for displaying prized possessions, creating a focal point in the living room. This allows the homeowner to make use of the dead space for both decorative and functional purposes.

4. Create a lounge area with a bench

If there is plenty of head space, consider converting the space beneath the staircase into a lounge area.

In this contemporary landed home, a previously underutilised space beneath the staircase has been transformed into a cosy lounge area that also serves as a place to sit while wearing or untying shoes. A simple bench made of light wood runs the length of the space under the stairs. The designer also takes advantage of the staircase's height space by incorporating large indoor plants and a tall mirror, while the abundance of natural light from the balcony makes it an ideal space for reading.

5. Create a pint-sized bedroom

If you have children or enjoy entertaining guests, consider converting the space under the stairs into a small bedroom.

Turning the space into a pint-sized bedroom does not have to be complicated or expensive either. Check out how the designer styled this small bedroom with only a small bed and warm lighting. A framed piece of art and a small side table helps to complete the look. The previously empty space can now be used to host guests or as a play, hide or nap area for your children.

6. Create an adults-only bar

For those who love to entertain, a bar nestled just beneath the stairs beats a simple bar cart any day!

In this modern landed home in Penang, the designer installed a built-in countertop for mixing and serving drinks, as well as a cabinet for liquor storage. A collection of mini liquor bottles framed to look like art elevates this space. Meanwhile, brick accent walls, wooden wall panelling, and metal accents give the area a rustic feel.

7. A mini zen garden

If you want to create a calming space for your mind to relax after a long day at work, consider incorporating a mini zen garden beneath your staircase. It's the ideal spot for unwinding and collecting your thoughts without having to leave the house.

The design team in this light-filled landed home made the most of every available space beneath the stairs by filling it with gravel, large rocks and tall plants that lend a peaceful and soothing Japanese zen aesthetic. The design scheme also complements the rest of the open space, which features earthy tones, minimalist decor, and plenty of natural light.
