Decorating a teen's bedroom can be tricky. There's a balance at play between giving them the freedom to decorate a room that expresses who they are (because they have begun to develop their own 'taste'), while also ensuring the rest of the home remains cohesive. A teen's bedroom should also be versatile enough for them to do their homework, hang out with friends, play games, relax, and sleep.

Need some inspiration for your teen's bedroom makeover? We've compiled a list of the best teen bedroom ideas that can be implemented in almost any space, regardless of its shape or size. These design ideas will not only make your teen's bedroom look cool and stylish, but they will also cater to your teen's individual needs and personality.

As your teen reaches the age where they no longer want to display their toys, switch it to something more grown-up or something they are interested in.

This cool bedroom, for example, is ideal for a teenage boy who enjoys playing guitar and skateboarding. Surface R installed a pegboard and guitar stand as the room's focal point, allowing the teen to neatly display his skateboard and guitar collection. Not only does it look stylish, but the clever storage options will help the teen to keep his room neat and organised. He also has the freedom to reorganise his display as often as he wants.

The bedroom also includes a study desk where the teen can study and revise in private. We also like the idea of putting a bed in a corner of the room to make it feel cosier.

2. Add a window seat for lounging

If your teenage children's bedroom is large enough, carve out a small window seat in the corner to provide them with a cosy nook to relax or socialise. Teenage girls, in particular, appreciate the idea of a bench seat with a view to look out from where they can curl up and finish an assignment or read a book, as seen in this bedroom designed by MIL Design & Construction.

To make the space more appealing to a teenage girl, the designer layered the space with plenty of soft textures such as a rug, plush blankets, velvet upholstery chair, pouffe, throw pillows and sheer curtains. The designer also installed open shelves, which allow the teen to display and decorate her room as she sees fit.

3. Provide an ample storage solution

Teenage bedrooms are frequently cluttered with books, clothes, sports equipment and other trinkets so it is important to consider plenty of storage solutions when furnishing their room. When selecting storage, choose something that is not only functional but also complements the room’s style.

If you're short on space, take a cue from this teen bedroom designed by Viyest Interior Design and go for smart solutions like a platform bed with a storage drawer underneath. The combination of various storage options found in this room – wardrobes, drawers, boxes, open shelves and baskets - allows the owner to keep his room looking stylish, tidy and organised.

To add personality to the bedroom, the designer painted some of the walls a dark turquoise colour that contrasts with the white ceiling and walls. It lends the room a masculine feel without making it appear drab or dreary.

4. Create an adaptable space

When decorating a teen's bedroom, try to strike a balance between allowing their personal tastes to shine through while also maintaining a timeless foundation that can be adapted as their tastes change. This will allow you to keep up with the various stages that teenagers go through.

The simplest way to do this is to use a neutral colour scheme for fixed furniture and let them take control of easily replaceable items like the room's decor, loose furnishings, and textiles.

This bedroom by PINS Studio is the perfect example to illustrate the point. The room's furniture and built-ins are in neutral colours, while accent pieces such as decor, pillowcases, blankets, and sheets are in the owner's favourite colour, and can be easily swapped whenever the teenager's preferences change. Whilst the accent pieces may be small or minimal, the impact they had on the room is huge!

5. Introduce pops of colour to enliven the space

While adults prefer a space that is calm and understated, teenagers often appreciate a room filled with a dose of colours and patterns; but not too vibrant or bright that it appears childish.

Here's proof that you can be bold with colours while still maintaining a clean, sophisticated look. The mustard yellow wall in this teen’s bedroom gives the space a youthful and playful feel, while black and moss green accents balance the visual aesthetic and make the room feel more grown-up and sophisticated. A whimsical pattern area rug elevates the space, which is a nice transitional touch.

6. Make a statement with wallpaper

Wallpaper is a quick and simple way to add fun colours and patterns to a bedroom. The best part is that you can simply replace the wallpaper every few years to give the room a completely new look without having to redecorate it. So instead of painting all of your teen’s bedroom walls, consider using wallpaper to create a focal point in the room.

Take a cue from this teen bedroom, where Expression Design and Contract Sdn. Bhd. used patterned pink wallpaper to create a feature wall behind the bed frame. Every other detail found in this bedroom, including the classic furniture, pink accents and dramatic chandelier contribute to the creation of an ideal bedroom, designed for a teenage girl who enjoys feminine style and fashion.

For added convenience, the bedroom includes a vanity where she can keep all of her grooming products organised and a space where she can get ready for the day.

7. Keep it simple in a shared bedroom

If your teens share one large room, consider two queen beds instead of two single-sized beds. The upgrade will make sharing a room feel more mature and comfortable, as young adults prefer to spend their time in bed doing things like watching movies, scrolling through social media and playing games, besides sleeping.

This teen bedroom is the perfect example of how to get it right. LoHC Studio kept the room modern and simple with a minimal, neutral colour scheme and matching furniture. It creates symmetry in the room and the white walls, floor, and ceiling give the room a light, bright, relaxing feel.
