Step inside this relaxing retreat.
For this married couple in their 30s, home is more than just a place to live, it’s a reflection of their lifestyle, hobbies, and the things they love most. As busy business owners, they wanted their new semi-D in Klang to feel calm, modern, and tailored to how they truly live, whether it’s unwinding after work, tending to their garden, or spending quiet weekends at home.
To turn that dream into reality, they commissioned Glassic Conzept to help them create a home that perfectly mirrors their way of life. We caught up with Ms. Fun, the project manager behind the house transformation, to find out how this 12-week renovation came together with a budget of RM420,000.
About the couple and their home
Miss Fun (MF): Our clients are a married couple in their 30s who run a logistics business. In their spare time, they enjoy spending quiet afternoons planting together in the garden. The husband also loves playing music as a hobby whenever he has the time.
They bought a 3,000 sqft semi-D in Klang, Selangor, which is a brand-new unit with 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. The main reason for choosing this place was convenience. The husband recently opened a factory nearby, and since his parents also stays in the area, it's convenient for him to visit both work and family.
Before moving in, they reached out to us for help with the renovation. They found us through social media, checked out our portfolio and decided to get in touch with us to see how we could bring their dream home to life.
About the design style chosen
From day one, it’s been such a great working relationship. They gave us their full trust to handle the renovation and were open to our ideas.
For this home, we proposed a modern contemporary design. The couple wasn’t afraid to play with darker tones, so we incorporated plenty of black and grey hues throughout the walls, furniture, and built-ins to contrast beautifully against the white backdrop. The mix adds depth and dimension, giving the home a bold yet elegant feel.
Since both of them love greenery, we made sure to weave nature into the design as well. Being a semi-D unit, there’s lots of yard space, so we thoughtfully placed planting areas throughout the garden. These little green corners bring a sense of calm and freshness, creating a nice balance between modern sophistication and nature’s tranquillity.
Overall, the design is all about blending elegance with practicality, a home that feels refined yet comfortable, filled with natural light and good ventilation that makes every space bright, airy, and inviting despite the dark tones.
About the renovation works
Since the property was brand new, my team carried out major renovation work including a full house repaint and the installation of smart lighting and motorised curtains. These upgrades allow the couple to conveniently manage their home’s lighting and curtains via their smartphones.
We also designed and installed custom built-ins throughout the home, from the porch and entryway to the living room, kitchen, and bedrooms, to create a seamless and cohesive look.
The flooring was completely redone as well. We used grey tiles for the ground floor and bathrooms, while the upper floor was fitted with warm wooden flooring to complement the home’s modern contemporary style.
To complete the look, we installed plaster ceilings and added a mix of ceiling, accent and pendant lights throughout the house. The layered lighting not only enhances the ambience but also highlights the home’s clean lines and textures beautifully.
A redesigned car porch
One of the biggest transformations in this renovation was the redesign of the car porch. The goal was to make the space feel more welcoming and inviting not just for the couple, but also for their guests.
We added vent blocks to enhance ventilation and visual interest, along with a built-in bench for guests to put on or take off their shoes. Warm lighting and ceiling fans were installed to create a comfortable atmosphere, while recessed lights were added to the vent blocks to give the exterior a subtle, elegant glow at night.
Redesigning the car porch was one of the toughest parts of the renovation, but it ended up being very rewarding. The front exterior now truly stands out – unique, welcoming, and nothing like the other cookie-cutter homes in the neighbourhood.
Master bathroom
Another major transformation took place in the master bathroom. Originally, it was quite a small bathroom, and there was an unused “dead space” just outside. Since the wife loves spa baths, we decided to extend the bathroom to create a more spacious layout that could fit a bathtub.
Blending the new extension with the home’s exterior wasn’t easy, especially since the bathroom faces the main road and sits above the car porch. To keep things looking cohesive, we added glass blocks that let in soft natural light while still matching the overall look of the porch below.
The whole bathroom was re-tiled with sleek porcelain tiles, and all the sanitary fittings were swapped for dark-toned ones to complement the home’s modern style. Now, the space feels luxurious, calm, and exactly like the personal spa retreat the couple envisioned.
Parents’ room with pocket garden
Because the couple is very close to their family, they decided to turn one of the spare bedrooms into a cosy room for their parents to stay in whenever they visit. The room is located on the ground floor, so their parents can easily access it without having to climb any stairs.
One of the special features of this room is its direct access to a small pocket garden at the back of the house. This happens to be one of my favourite parts of the entire home design. It features a wooden deck and a built-in bench, creating a peaceful little corner where the family can sit, relax and enjoy some fresh air while tending to their plants.
When the room isn’t occupied, the wife loves using the space for her foot bath sessions, where she can unwind and enjoy a relaxing soak while being surrounded by nature.
Leisure, hobby and entertainment spaces
Since it’s mainly just the two of them, the couple decided to tailor their abode around how they truly live and relax. One of the spare rooms was turned into an entertainment room, complete with a casual gaming setup and TV. It is the perfect spot for movie nights, gaming sessions, or simply unwinding together after a long day.
There’s a little nook under the stairs where the husband keeps his drum set. It is his personal corner to jam, practise, and relax with music during his downtime.
In the dry kitchen, we installed an island with bar stools and open shelves, creating a versatile space that works just as well for casual meals as it does for a quick coffee break or some quiet reading time.
We also added a built-in cabinet to neatly store kitchen appliances like the microwave, along with extra storage for glassware and a handy handwashing sink, so they don’t have to step into the wet kitchen every time.
To sum up
The renovation process went smoothly from start to finish, and we couldn’t be happier with the final result, especially knowing that the couple was thrilled with not just the outcome but also the service and teamwork we provided throughout the project.
One thing they mentioned loving the most was having spots in the home to enjoy their hobbies. Whether it’s spending time in the pocket garden or jamming in the music corner in the living room, these little personal touches have really made the house feel like theirs.
