Built-in storage units are a saviour for any home, regardless if you live in a small apartment or a spacious landed home. Besides offering creative solutions to everyday problems and disguising unsightly features like clutters, custom built-ins can also enhance the appearance of a home.
Besides wardrobe and bookcases, check out other cool ways to store items that you use every day with custom built-ins, so vertical surfaces like floors and countertops can remain free from clutter.
1. A study desk and bookcase
Devoting an entire wall to a built-in storage unit is a great solution to ensure that you maximise your space and also create a focal point in a room. Take design cues from this modern home that feature a concealed floor to ceiling storage unit that mimics a panel wall, creating a smooth design flow in the living room.
More than just storage and a stylish false wall, this built-in cabinet actually conceals a study desk and bookshelf via a hidden door.
2. TV screen and wires
For most living rooms, TV is the centre of attention. While your flat-screen TVs don't take up a lot of room, your gadgets that go with your TV like cable box, or gaming system (and all the cords that go with them) however are super unsightly.
As a solution, Viinc Studio installed a built-in cabinet with pocket doors to hide the flat-screen TV along with the accessories, making this living room look neat and uncluttered.
3. Kitchen pantry
Bottles, boxes, bags, and jars of food stocks usually clutter up a space, making good storage vital for keeping a clean and neat look in the kitchen.
To create a visually relaxing open kitchen space, Cube Creation has created a hidden pantry area that blends effortlessly into the kitchen walls and the rest of the kitchen cabinet via a minimalist white door so all food items are tucked out of sight when not in use.
4. Laundry appliances
Large appliances can create visual clutter. As a solution, Penang based interior designer, Nevermore Group has an ingenious idea of hiding large appliances from out of sight by installing a built-in black cabinet that acts as a secret room to keep laundry items including a washing machine and dryer in one neat space.
This ‘hidden’ laundry area also kept similar items together (detergent, hangers, towels and more) which makes things easier and more convenient for the homeowners to find.
5. Bedroom vanity
Want a vanity in your bedroom, but don’t want the space to feel cluttered? Try this clever idea. To save space, PINS Studio has outfitted this bedroom with a slim custom-built desk that has a top in the centre of the desk that flips open to reveal a neat vanity that comes complete with a mirror and compartments to store makeup and hair accessories.
The homeowner can open it up in the morning to get ready, then close the top to hide make-up and accessories when they’re done.
6. Bedroom mattress
To prevent small spaces from looking cluttered, get creative with carpentry and incorporate hide-and-seek features as seen in this minimalist bedroom.
Here, Pocket Square eliminated the need for a bedroom wardrobe by incorporating several storage compartments under the custom bed frame for keeping items out of sight. As a result, the bedroom becomes spacious as less furnishing is required.
7. Tinkers and accessories
Using the space under the stairs as a storage unit can be a wonderfully effective and fun solution especially for a kid's bedroom.
Here, EE Design Studio did just that with smart built-in stairs that lead towards the upper bunk bed, that also double as a storage space to keep clutter under control.
