It also comes with a cool cave-inspired feature wall!
A couple who bought a luxury condominium in Puchong wanted their abode to stand out from the typical developer unit. They turned to Stuarts Design to bring their vision to life and the result? A chic, loft-style home that’s not only stylish but also perfectly set up for their adorable pug.
From a striking cave-inspired feature wall to thoughtful pet-friendly touches in every corner, Stuarts Design infused the space with character and charm. The team shared insights into the renovation journey, which spanned approximately 6 months and was completed with a budget of RM245,300.
About the homeowners and their home
Both working in the essential oils industry, the couple share a passion for travel, making it a point to go on holiday at least twice a year. At home, their days are brightened by the company of their lovable pug. In their downtime, they enjoy cosy movie nights and unwinding in the comfort of their home with their furry companion by their side.
Nestled along Jalan Puchong in Kuala Lumpur, the couple resides in an 822 sqft condominium completed in 2023. The unit features 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and came fully furnished by the developer, including built-in cabinets and electrical appliances.
They chose this unit for its strategic location, which is conveniently located between their parents’ home and workplace, making daily commutes and family visits a breeze. The fact that it’s a freehold property also added long-term value and made it an even more attractive investment.
About their chosen design style for the home
The couple had a clear vision of what they wanted from the start. They didn’t like the design offered by the developer and wanted us to remove all existing cabinetry and electrical appliances to make way for a more personalised space. One of the key changes was converting one of their spare bedrooms into a dedicated walk-in wardrobe.
Above all, they wanted a home that truly felt like their own, one that reflected their lifestyle and personal taste: a cosy, modern and luxurious space with sleek, stylish touches that suited their daily routines. Just as important, they wanted the home to be comfortable and welcoming for their beloved pug.
Based on their feedback, we proposed a modern contemporary design characterised by natural textures and organic elements with refined finishes, resulting in a space that feels both earthy and sophisticated.
The interior ambience is defined by neutral and earthy tones setting a grounded and calming mood throughout the home. We also incorporated dark tones like dark brown and black accents to highlight architectural elements and add contrast. These dark tones are balanced with lighter accents like light grey and warm lighting to prevent the space from feeling cramped.
With a smart lighting system installed throughout the house, the couple can easily control ambiance directly from their smartphone. This seamless integration enhances flexibility and sets the mood for different times of day or activities.
About the house renovation
Kitchen and dining
The home features an open-plan layout where two areas (kitchen and dining area) were merged into one space, enhancing the sense of flow and usability. In the kitchen, sleek matte cabinets are paired with open shelving and integrated ambient backlighting.
The peninsula is super practical, it serves as both dining and prep area. Beneath the counter, concealed storage helps keep everyday items out of sight, maintaining a clean and clutter-free look. We even adjusted the peninsula height to accommodate the couple's parents, who like visiting and cooking for them. The custom height peninsular makes it easier for them to prepare meals. Above it, minimalist pendant lighting adds a modern touch while contributing to the modern yet inviting ambience.
Living Room
In the living room, the existing TV area was repositioned to optimise viewing angles and create better spatial flow in the common area. Every piece of loose furniture was carefully chosen to complement the overall design narrative, modern, elegant and understated.
One of the standout features of the living room is a textured feature wall enhanced with warm lighting. These walls showcase a raw, sculpted finish that’s intended to mirror the organic elegance of natural rock formations, enhanced with warm backlighting to bring out depth and shadow. This design element is echoed throughout key areas of the home, reinforcing the cave-inspired, grounded concept and creating a cohesive, immersive atmosphere.
Another standout design feature is the curved copper reflective panel built into the living room cabinet. It catches the natural light streaming in from the balcony and bounces it around the room, making the whole space feel brighter and more open.
When designing the condominium, we considered the needs of their furry family member. A key feature is the custom-built dog cage, seamlessly integrated into the living room cabinetry, giving their pug a cosy, secure spot to relax while the couple unwinds on the sofa.
Beyond that, pet-friendly details are woven throughout the home. All cabinets feature rounded edges to prevent accidental injuries and we selected scratch-resistant curtains with higher density compared to normal curtains so they don’t easily trap pup's hair.
The master bedroom
The bedrooms continue with the modern vibe, enveloping occupants in a cocoon of comfort. This is achieved using the dramatic backlit stone-textured feature wall (similarly found in the living room) integrated with the bedhead panel. This detail elevates the entire space, adding depth, sophistication and a luxurious ambiance through the interplay of texture, light and shadow.
We also installed a custom-built wardrobe with integrated display shelving. Each element has been chosen not only for its aesthetic value but also for its contribution to a cohesive and functional environment. For instance, the wardrobe features glass doors, soft under-cabinet lighting and reflective surfaces to amplify light and visual spaciousness while maintaining a cohesive dark-toned palette of the room.
Another noteworthy feature is the built-in vanity, cleverly concealed behind a cabinet door. This smart design choice preserves the room’s clean, minimalist aesthetic while still offering full functionality, proving that style and practicality can go hand in hand.
Spare bedroom turned into walk-in wardrobe
As mentioned earlier, the couple requested a dedicated walk-in wardrobe, so one of the spare bedrooms was transformed to meet that need. We installed floor-to-ceiling cabinets which provide ample storage with a sleek, organised layout tailored to the couple’s fashion and lifestyle needs.
The cabinet and shelves are custom-designed to match the dark, textured interior, the cabinetry provides concealed storage that keeps the space clean and organised.
Guest bedrooms
Since the couple’s parents frequently visit and stay over, one of the bedrooms was transformed into a guest room. Designed with a lighter colour palette, the space looks warm and welcoming, offering a comfortable and restful environment for their loved ones.
Bathroom
The bathrooms also underwent a complete transformation. They were updated with custom-built vanity sets and mirrors, replacing the standard developer fittings. To maintain a sense of openness, we introduced sleek glass partitions that separate wet and dry zones without blocking natural light or creating visual barriers.
About the renovation challenges
The most challenging aspect of this renovation was achieving the desired texture and finish on the feature walls. The unique, cave-inspired concept called for a highly customised paint treatment that required meticulous planning and skilled craftsmanship. Balancing depth, colour consistency, and durability proved to be a detailed process that demanded both time and precision.
However, the effort paid off, resulting in a striking and distinctive feature wall that anchors the overall aesthetic of the home.
To sum up
The final results exceeded all expectations. The home now reflects both thoughtful design and quality craftsmanship. It was a truly rewarding experience to work with a couple who had a clear vision, strong design sensibility and a collaborative spirit. Their openness and trust allowed us to explore creative ideas and build a home that is truly personal and tailored to their way of living.
The clients were genuinely appreciative of the time, effort and detail that we poured into the renovation project. They felt that the finished home fully reflected their vision and in some areas, even surpassed what they had imagined. Their positive feedback and emotional response affirmed that we had created more than just a beautiful space.
