Inside a Serene, Multi-Generational Family Home in Mont Kiara, KL

It even comes with an indoor garden.

The opportunity to experiment with bold patterns and rich textures in a residential project doesn’t come around often. So when a couple approached STUARTS DESIGN®️ with a vision for a home that would embrace both, the team was eager to take on the challenge.

“The clients’ willingness to push design boundaries gave us the opportunity to create bespoke solutions and unique design moments that might not have happened in a more conventional project. The result is a home that feels deeply personal, distinctive, and a true reflection of the people who live there,” says STUARTS DESIGN®️ Founder and Design Director, Katherine Stuart.

Working closely with the homeowners, Katherine and Design Manager Cindy Lim transformed an old home into a light-filled sanctuary with the understated luxury of a boutique hotel. Here, they share the story behind the renovation, which cost over RM2 million, and the thoughtful details that brought the home to life.

About the client and their home

Katherine Stuart (KS): The homeowners love to travel and often spend their holidays exploring different parts of the world. Along the way, they've stayed in many luxury boutique hotels and visited beautifully designed retail spaces, which naturally influenced their taste in interiors.

When they're not travelling, they're happiest at home spending time with family. The couple live with their parents and beloved pet, so finding a home that could comfortably accommodate everyone was important.

When they came across an old 3,600 sq ft multi-storey semi-detached house in Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur, they immediately saw its potential. The spacious layout, established neighbourhood and solid structure made it the perfect starting point for the home they had envisioned.

About the home’s design

One of the things the design team enjoyed most about this project was working with homeowners who knew exactly what they wanted from the start. The couple was heavily involved throughout the entire process, paying close attention to every detail while remaining open to new ideas and creative solutions.

Having stayed in many luxury hotels around the world, they had a clear understanding of the kind of experience they wanted their home to offer. More than just a cosmetic makeover, the goal was to create a home that felt comfortable, functional and thoughtfully designed for the whole family.

Since the couple lives with their elderly parents, accessibility was a key consideration when designing the home. The team looked for ways to make the home easier to navigate while still achieving the sophisticated, hotel-like atmosphere the homeowners loved.

On top of that, they wanted the home to feel personal, contemporary and calm. Subtle Chinese influences were woven into the design throughout, reflecting the homeowners’ cultural identity while still keeping the overall look modern and clean.

The result is a home shaped by intention and lived experience. It’s modern, but not cold. Luxurious, but never showy. Every space has that quiet, comfortable feel that comes from people who really know how they want to live. In part, this is thanks to the warm materials like timber flooring, natural stone, bespoke detailing, and layered lighting used throughout to bring softness and depth to the spaces.

The colour palette stays grounded in warm neutrals, stone tones and rich timber finishes, with textured layers that keep things interesting without overwhelming the eye. Against this calm backdrop, feature artworks, wallpapers and decorative pieces add just the right amount of contrast to the space.

About the renovation works

The resale property was still in good condition when the homeowners purchased it, but it needed a bit of modernisation to suit their lifestyle. The renovation focused on improving how the spaces feel and function day to day by enhancing flow, usability, accessibility, and overall liveability while still keeping the original character of the house intact.

Smart technology was also integrated in a very subtle way to make everyday living smoother and more convenient. For example we installed automated curtains, sensor lighting, a fresh air ventilation system, solar panels, and CCTV for added security around the house.

Other than that, a few practical upgrades were made around the house, such as adding glass roofing over the entrance car porch and terrace, as well as fencing works to improve safety and privacy.

The light-filled courtyard

Light plays a big role in how the home feels. On the ground floor, there used to be a small open-air courtyard that actually broke up the flow of the space. To improve this, we decided to enclose it and turn it into an indoor garden and a dedicated pet area, using glazing and a glass roof.

The transformation has made the space feel brighter, more spacious, and better connected to the rest of the home. Today, it serves as a cosy retreat for the family, where they can relax in the rattan chair while enjoying views of the lush indoor garden and outdoor greenery, rain or shine. To make the space pet-friendly as well, we carefully selected non-toxic plants that are safe for the family's dogs.

Thanks to the glass windows, natural light now moves easily from room to room, softening edges and bringing out the textures of the materials throughout the house.

At the same time, the new layout also allowed for a more practical walking route for the lift, which was added to support long-term living for all generations in the home. This has greatly improved both accessibility and overall flow of the space.

The main living area

The main living area strikes a nice balance between bold and soft. A shimmering dark marble feature sits alongside soft sheer curtains, while textured wall panels add depth without making the space feel heavy.

A floral accent chair brings in a bit of personality and colour, while the built-in TV wall is designed more like a sculptural feature than just a storage unit. Every surface was chosen with light in mind, from the glossy flooring to the reflective glass panels, so the atmosphere in the room changes gently throughout the day, yet always feels warm and inviting.

The kitchen

The kitchen carries the same sense of refinement, but with a more social, easygoing energy. It features honed marble flooring with a specialised protective coating that helps ground the space while keeping it practical for daily use.

At the centre of the kitchen, a Cosentino island slab acts as the main focal point and naturally becomes a gathering spot for the whole family, whether it’s for light meals, casual conversations, or a quick coffee together. Custom-built feeding station were also integrated into the island allowing their furry family members’ food and water bowls to be neatly tucked away while remaining easily accessible.

The open layout makes it easy to move between cooking, dining, and entertaining, so the space feels connected rather than segmented. Overall, the design supports the family’s everyday lifestyle while still feeling calm, considered, and not overly formal.

The master bedroom

The master suite is easily the defining feature of the project. Occupying the entire second floor, it was designed as a private sanctuary inspired by the calm and comfort of luxury hospitality spaces. It feels quiet and gentle, and is intentionally set apart from the rest of the home.

The idea was to create a self-contained retreat where the homeowners can unwind in comfort and privacy, while still staying connected to the overall flow of the house.

The suite features a spacious bedroom, a private balcony and a luxurious ensuite bathroom, complete with a freestanding bathtub, double vanity, separate shower, and enclosed water closet. Warm stone, glass, and soft lighting come together in the ensuite to create a spa-like atmosphere that encourages slow mornings and relaxed evenings.

The master bedroom also comes with a walk-in wardrobe inspired by luxury hotels and high-end retail stores. Featuring a custom wardrobe system, a display island with glass showcases, warm ambient lighting, and a built-in vanity, the space feels less like a wardrobe and more like stepping into your own private boutique.

On the same level, there’s also a dedicated workspace for the owners. It’s designed as a quiet corner where they can work comfortably, with carefully curated artwork adding focal points and bringing a bit of character and colour to the overall neutral toned space.

The bathrooms

All the bathrooms in the home were fully upgraded with contemporary finishes and improved layouts to make them more functional and comfortable for daily use.

The parents’ bathroom in particular was given special attention, with an elderly-friendly design approach. It includes smart sanitary fittings and hand grips, helping to ensure safety and ease of use.

The powder room, meanwhile, was designed as a statement space of its own. A mix of different tiles, distinctive wall lighting, modern sanitary fittings and a custom wallpaper that gives the room a luxurious jewel-box feel.

About the home decor choices

The decorative elements throughout the home reflect the homeowners’ personal interests, creative taste, and travel experiences. Across the space, subtle textures bring life to what would otherwise be simple surfaces. For example, upon entry, guests are greeted by a bespoke etched mirror feature wall that immediately sets the tone for the home.

In the parents’ suite, tonal wall panels are used to create a sense of warmth and softness, making the room feel more relaxed and inviting. By the staircase, a nature-inspired feature wall anchors the vertical space and creates a strong visual moment as you walk through the stairs.

Elsewhere, abstract art pieces, curated lighting, and thoughtful decorative accents are placed throughout the home, adding personality and interest while still keeping the overall look calm and cohesive.

On challenges encountered

The renovation took almost a year and a half to complete, largely due to a few key factors. One of the main reasons was the level of customisation involved throughout the project. From the beginning, the homeowners were very hands-on, often refining ideas and introducing new ones as things progressed, which naturally added more layers to the process.

Managing all these evolving details required time and careful coordination, especially as many elements were custom-made to fit their vision.

To sum up

Nonetheless, the final result went beyond our expectations, and it was genuinely rewarding to see the renovation come to life. With the homeowners actively involved throughout the process and contributing their own creative input, the project naturally evolved into something very personal and distinctive.

Overall, the renovation is a good reminder of how thoughtful planning, personalised design, and attention to detail can really elevate the way a home is experienced every day.
