Adding potted plants to your home’s interior is a style-inducing and affordable way to incorporate green balance to modern design. Having a few pretty plants about will not only freshen up dated décor but also increases oxygen in the home as well as rids the air of common household toxins.
Here are five plants you can introduce to your home’s interior for practicality and personality:
1. Areca Palm
Palms can hide a number of design sins, for instance, the larger variety of Areca Palms can be used to conceal eyesores in your home such as exposed vertical piping and visible load-bearing pillars or to simply fill up space in open layouts. In addition, its green, fan-like branches can impart a tropical vibe and soften harsher décor (e.g. bright whites and industrial themes).
2. Pothos Plant
An easy plant to take care of (it can thrive in low-lights as well as artificial lighting); the pretty Pothos can be used to enhance green imagery in bedrooms, bathrooms and living rooms. What’s more, the plant has air purifying qualities that removes carbon dioxide from the air and enhances oxygen. Its leaves are mildly toxic however, so it’s best to keep out of reach of children or pets – consider using a hanging pot if you have little ones about.
3. Orchid
If you fancy a bit of flower power, nothing beats the Orchid for an indoor blossom boom. Apart from adding an easy burst of colour, the Orchid, or more specifically Moth Orchid removes toluene and xylene from the air in your home (commonly found in nail polish, paint thinners and household cleansers). The plant also works with many décor themes, be it traditional, vintage or modern and goes nicely with neutral tones and floral colour schemes. Since they require quite a bit of sunlight, its best to place them by windows where you can further up the style factor by growing them is design-appropriate vases.
4. Mother-in-Law’s Tongue
Apart from having an ultra-catchy name, this plant also is attractively sleek and has the potential to be a statement piece. With upright, dramatic and darker leaves, it settles well among deeper-toned or vivid colour interiors. Fortunately, this plant is quite sturdy and doesn’t need much care and attention; less water with high sunlight is best. Moreover, the plant can help reduce chemicals such as formaldehyde and benzene from the air in your home. Note that if you have pets in the home, it’s best to keep them away from the plant as it is moderately toxic.
5. Zebra Plant
With its lovely contrasting deep green and white striped leaves – the Zebra plant is easy on the eyes and easy to maintain indoors. Smaller sized plants are perfect as a coffee table piece whereas larger varieties can stand against windows or be placed in empty corners. Moreover, the darker green tone of Zebra plants can complement both light and medium hued interiors. On a practical note, the Zebra plant also helps remove ammonia from the air.
