New Home Checklist: 7 Things You Need to Do Right Away!

August 15, 2016

Collecting the keys to your brand new home is the start of a fun and exciting journey as a homeowner. But the journey shouldn’t begin without you making sure of a few details to ensure that your new home is not only safe but that everything is in working order as well. So we prepared this new-home checklist to get you off on the right foot. You’ll thank us for it!

1. Change your locks

You don’t know how many people have a copy of your keys – the previous owners, any previous tenants, contractors, agents – the list really goes on and on. If the house has an alarm system, be sure to change the code.

2. Check all pipes

Be it gas, water or anything else, be sure to thoroughly check all the pipes in your new home to ensure that there are no leaks. You may want to engage professional help for this like a plumber or your contractor for a better check.

3. Check your sink faucets and shower heads.

Go to all sinks and bathrooms and turn on all the faucets, pipes and showerheads to make sure that clean water comes out of them. You’d want to check for both cold and hot water if that’s available in your new home. Also, be sure to make sure that the pressure is decent. While you’re at it, do flush all toilets to see that they flush properly! Also check that the water flows through all sinks, tubs and toilets. You may want to consider turning all the faucets on at the same time and then flushing a toilet upstairs to see whether there is any difference to the water pressure – this may indicate an issue.

4. Are all electrical points and appliances working?

Twenty electrical points and just one working? Don’t let that happen to you in your new home! Go around and check all electrical points in all rooms to make sure they are working. Also, if you have appliances already in the house, you’d want to switch those ones to check that there are no issues at all. Flip on all lights too – and leave them on for a while. You never know which bulbs might be blinking out on you or doing that annoying flicker. Ready air-conditioning units in your new home? Turn those one as well to look out for leaks, unusual sounds or malfunctions.

5. Windows and walls

Most new homeowners miss this, thinking that there could never be anything wrong with them, right? Wrong – it is important that you open all windows to see that they open all the way and make sure to close to check if the latch works properly. Also, inspect all walls in your new home for cracks, wet spots or stains. Speaking of wet spots, check your ceilings too for them. Stains could indicate leaking from the roof. Any necessary repair work will be easier to do when your home isn’t packed with your stuff yet.

With renovation works, dust and dirt are definites and not pleasant at all for those
with allergies. So before you move in all your furniture, it is a good idea to get professional cleaners to give your new home a good clean from top to bottom, in and out.
