No Baby-Drama: Calming Decor for Your Nursery

May 29, 2019

Welcome your baby into a space that is comforting, gentle, and pacifying with the right décor! A soothing and calm nursery is essential to helping your new-born sleep restfully and healthily.

Let’s take a look at five decor tips to creating a calming space for baby (and mom and dad!)

1. Opt for a tranquil colour scheme

Choosing a calming nursery colour is the first step to creating a sleep haven for your little one. Soft shades of green promote calmness and serenity, while passive blues tend to decrease anxiety and agitation in new-borns. You can play around with other colours such as lilac, light pinks, and earthy neutrals; but remember to stay away from overly energetic colours like bright reds and sharp yellows.

2. Keep cool

Blackout curtains are an excellent way to block out harsh sunlight and keep the room cool and dark for soothing afternoon naps. You may opt to install UV-blocking drapes to reduce the risk of overheating in your nursery. Studies show that a cool and well-circulated nursery can reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) by more than 70%. You can also have fun with your curtains, choosing colours and patterns that accentuate the tranquil theme of your nursery.

3. Avoid overcrowding

It’s hard to achieve Zen mode for both baby and parents when your nursery is cluttered and crowded. Keep in mind that your baby’s toys and accessories will accumulate with time, so get creative with storage options. Go for built-in cabinets, multi-level storage boxes, or purchase cribs that come with their own drawers to ensure you have plenty of space to move around. Arrange furniture for maximum utility and easy travel flow (i.e. between the changing station, crib, and seating space). Don't rush to fill up the room with items; instead, allow the room to grow with your baby.

4. Lighting

Take special consideration when choosing to light your baby room. Harsh lights and incandescent lights, which heat up quickly are a big no-no. The same goes for floor lamps, which pose a safety hazard for crawling and curious babies. To create a soothing atmosphere for your baby, it is best to work with two levels of lighting; ambient/general lighting for baby’s play time and task lights for parents during diaper changes, etc. Dimmers can come in handy to create multi-level lighting for different activities. Include a low-wattage and dim night light for an unobtrusive source of light in the night if required (for feeding, etc.).

5. Go organic

There is nothing more comforting to parents than knowing that their baby is safe and comfortable in their nursery. This is why more parents are choosing to go organic and chemical-free (as much as possible) when decorating a baby room. Pick furniture and wall paint with low to zero-VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) for your baby’s room. Also, stay away from synthetic materials and toxic chemicals such as formaldehyde, found in common household items like bedding, cleaning products, and carpeting/flooring glue.
