Smart Garden Ideas for Small Spaces

January 18, 2017

Love to plant but you don’t own a garden? Here is how you can build a space-savvy garden in small, modern homes – without even needing a yard!

Choose indoor plants

You don’t necessarily need to grow plants in a garden – having windows can do just the trick! Smaller plants can be hung close to a window that gets plenty of sunlight or in mason jars mounted onto the wall. If you do not naturally have a green thumb, you can easily find potted herbs in your local nurseries or supermarkets that will thrive once they are in contact with adequate water and sunlight.

Create a vertical garden

Do you have a small balcony at home? Utilize its vertical space to grow your favorite plants without losing out on floor space. Pallets and long, multilevel planter boxes are excellent choices for balconies and narrow patios. Alternatively, fill a shoe organizer with soil and seeds and hang it where the sun shines the most.

Garden in a tray

On a tray, combine a few different types of small potted plants to create an illusion of a mini garden. You can place the tray anywhere you want - at a quiet corner, atop the dining table, by the sink, or have it constantly moved around the house – all thanks to the ease in portability. A copper tray makes an exceptional choice as it can effectively catch drips to avoid mess and drench inside the house.

Windowsills and ledges

If you stay in a condominium, you can make use of the ledges to put together a few planter boxes. By doing this, plants will be able to receive plenty of sunlight while not having to take up even an inch of floor space.

Container gardening
Small-scale gardening is perfect for confined, indoor spaces. This type of gardening is easily manageable as it does not require patching and reseeding if the plant dies. If a plant catches a disease, it is also less likely to infect other plants as they are grown separately. Highly portable, container plants can be moved around the house with no digging required.

Homegrown flowers are a delight to look at, while being able to grow your own food gives you complete control over what you feed your family and yourself. Do not have the space for a garden at home?
