Upsizing? Here are 6 Design Tips To Decorating a Large Room

December 24, 2019

While a small footage home can be tricky to furnish due to its limited space, bigger homes present their own set of challenges as well. A big room can be wonderful for entertaining a big group of guests, but not as cosy or even functional for day to day living.

If you’re facing this design dilemma in your own home, take our interior design tips below to make your room feel balanced and comfortable despite its huge floor plan.

1. Strategically place indoor tall potted plants

If you live in a home with tall ceilings, fill vertical height in your rooms with potted trees. As long as your space gets enough light to support the plant’s needs, you really can’t go wrong with adding a massive houseplant at home.

2. Create a second seating or reading area

If you have an extra open space, consider turning it into a second seating or reading area. If you put as much effort in this area as you do on your main seating area, it may become your new favourite hangout spot. You can create a mini library by installing floor-to-ceiling shelves and add bean bags to create a more laid-back environment into the space.

3. Fill a large space with an L-shaped sofa

Furniture that is too small for a home with a big floor plan will make the room feel empty and out of proportion. Hence you will likely need to upsize your furniture too. It may mean choosing a four-seater sofa instead of a three-seater or a great big L-shaped sofa to accommodate the large empty space. This piece of furniture not only screams comfort but it is also great in separating the living and the dining area.

4. Round out a big bedroom space with benches or daybed

Do you have an extra-large bedroom that looks awkward and empty no matter how you layout your furniture? Instead of having unused floor space, try making full use of the space by adding a bench, daybed, or small sofa at the foot of your bed to give the room layers and add functionality. This will bring back the cosiness in no time!
