11 Best Space-Saving Furniture Ideas for More Space at Home

January 22, 2020

The best part about these pieces is that you can bring them along when you move – even the murphy beds!

Life in a compact 65 square metres, 3-room HDB flat or condo doesn’t mean you can’t have room for guests to stay, or for your kids to play and study freely – you just need to choose the right furniture.

Here, we’ve rounded up 11 efficient options from Spaceman Furniture that’ll both save AND maximise whatever limited square footage that you have available.

From a compact 1.1 metres unfolding dining table that can sit up to six people to an ottoman seat that becomes five dining chairs (!), these furniture pieces will ensure you won’t be driven into a tight corner when it’s time to figure out your home’s layout.

1. Slumbersofa Highback – Real mattress sofa bed with headrests

Most sofa beds on the market basically involve you lying on the sofa itself but the Italian-made Slumbersofa Highback certainly isn’t one of them. Instead, this unique sofa with adjustable headrests is designed with an actual mattress hidden inside (also made in Italy) that has an anti-bacterial, anti-mite cotton stretch fabric cover.

What’s even more impressive is that both the sofa’s covering, as well as the mattress itself, are customisable too. For the former, you get to choose between a fire-retardant, easy to wipe HydroCare coated fabric or real, sumptuous cow leather; as for the latter, options such as memory foam are available.

2. Slumbersofa Plush – Luxurious sofa with a hidden bed

While it is a sofa bed like the Slumbersofa Highback, the Slumbersofa Plush works differently as it gives the best of both worlds: a proper bed with an orthopaedic base and a sumptuous sofa that can be used 365 days a year, either as a comfortable seat, or when needed, a handy guest bed.

And like a conventional queen/double-size bed that you’d put in a bedroom, there’s also the possibility of customising the Slumbersofa Plush with a headboard, shelves, and even a bedside table or any other cabinetry you would like to accompany the bed.

3. Slumbersofa Pronto – Quick unfolding sofa bed

Every time we see one of those sofa beds with claims that they are easy to use, we can’t help but worry if that’s really going to be the case.

Common issues with run-of-the-mill models can range from the minor (e.g. an uncomfortable material) to somewhat serious (e.g. too heavy to lift/stiff unfolding mechanism). That said, with the Slumbersofa Pronto and its quick pull-out transformation system, you won’t encounter any of these problems.

Thanks to a quick pull-out transformation system, it’s possible to turn the Slumbersofa Pronto into a beautiful bed of your choice (single, single +, super single, double or queen) within a matter of seconds.

That said, mattress size isn’t the only customisable feature of the Slumbersofa Pronto – with over 200 fabric and leather covers as well a wide variety of arm designs and leg colours, you can have this versatile sofa bed designed according to your desired look. For example, you can choose a set of slim arms to fit a tight space or a pair of chunky ones to luxuriate over in a bigger room.

Finally, there’s also an optional ‘Lift n’Wheel’ system that makes it easy to move the Pronto around when it’s cleaning time.

4. Slumbersofa Duo – Double-decker sofa bunk bed

It’s hard to believe at first sight, but the Slumbersofa Duo is indeed a sofa that converts into a fully-functional bunk bed. Simply lift up the ‘top’ bunk (which is part of the sofa’s seats), lock it in place, and you’ll have enough sleeping space for two – be they adults or children.

And don’t worry about falling off or having difficulty scaling to the top of this modular sofa/bunk bed as the Slumbersofa Duo comes with essential safety features that are designed in Italy, which include an integrated protection rail, ladder, and of course, a key-based locking system for extra reassurance.

5. Slumbershelves – Hidden bed + shelves and TV Console

We didn’t think it was possible to create a TV console with a hidden bed the size of a feature wall (and honestly, neither would you) until we discovered the SlumberTV and Slumbershelves combo from Spaceman, which are ideal for a studio or open-plan apartment in need of sleeping accommodations.

How these Murphy beds work is a bit of a wonder: their front panels can be spun around to reveal a queen bed behind that can be folded out, thus making them the closest thing to a ‘secret chamber’ that fits a compact condo/HDB flat.

6. Slumberdesk – Work desk and bed combined

Just like the rest of the Slumber beds, the Slumberdesk is named after its defining feature (no prizes for guessing what it is!) that makes it a great fit for kids and guest rooms alike.

To take it from desk to bed, all you have to do is tug lightly on the frame before letting the built-in mechanism and its soft open/closing system do the rest.

For narrow but long rooms, there’s also the option of having the Slumberdesk, as with any of the beds featured, configured in a horizontal position so it can open sideways to fit a narrow space better. That allows for the luxury of a proper bed and work table (with matching cabinetry to boot), tucked along a single wall for efficient space usage.

7. Cascade – Kids bunk bed with desk

Children’s furniture is serious business, and that’s why the Cascade is designed the way it is: with a lower height than its full-sized counterparts for adults, this bunk bed is a better and safer option for younger kids who are still growing up.

This also frees up space above the bed for much-needed storage or wardrobes which can be customised for your kids' room – there are 30 different colours for all of these features so you can achieve a look that lasts well into your children’s teenage years.

Thoughtfulness aside, the Cascade also helps to save on precious square footage because it comes with not just two beds, but also two study desks as well as a pair of top and bottom drawers, all of which are colour customisable for aesthetic appeal. Need a third bed? The lower drawers can also be replaced with another pull-out bed.

8. Wings – Ceramic coffee + dining table

One of the 30 coffee/dining tables available from Spaceman, the design of the Wings table is about as straightforward it gets with clean lines and a rectangular profile, but don’t let that make you think it’s any less useful.

Thanks to a pair of adjustable legs that allow its height to be set between 26 to 86 cm, the Wings can be used as either a coffee or dining table for up to 6 people – and that means having one less piece of furniture to worry about squeezing in a tight home.

9. Morph – Extending dining table

If you’re seeing the Morph dining table for the first time, its shape (squared on one end and curved on the other) might strike you as odd. However, this asymmetry is intentional as it allows the Morph to be tucked neatly against a wall when it isn’t fully extended.

On the squared end, a hidden panel can be unfolded to give the Morph table an extra 60 cm in length, essentially allowing it to sit about 6 people (with enough arm space to spare) and saving you from having to jostle with friends/family during dinner time.

10. Ensemble mini – Wall-mounted table with chair storage

Don’t let a small hallway or nook go to waste (it might be tiny, BUT it’s still space after all). Instead, consider turning it into a compact dining area or a cosy reading corner with the Ensemble mini – a wall-mounted built-in that combines a table and three chairs into a neat, minimalist ‘package’.

In case you have to cater to the needs of a larger family/group, there’s also a full-sized counterpart of the Ensemble mini, which is none other than the Ensemble and it comes with 3 extra chairs, along with an entire dining table! (Yes, we’re impressed.)

11. Multiply – Ottoman that becomes five dining chairs

What’s better than 1 chair? 5 chairs? Not really. But a single ottoman that can transform into numerous seats, and back again? Now, that’s seriously impressive.

The aptly-named Multiply comes with a set of 5 chrome bases (stackable, for easy storage) and an equal number of seats that can be customised with either fabric or leather, depending on your choice. Consider getting it if you’re looking for the perfect companion for a space-saving dining/coffee table (e.g. the Wings).
