Archifest 2019: Architours, Woodworking and Kintsugi

Back for its 13th edition is the annual Archifest Singapore! This year, the festival boasts a stellar line-up of over 30 programmes from 27 September to 9 October 2019.

The theme of Archifest 2019 is Craft. Learn more about architecture and craftsmanship through (free) exhibitions, discover hidden spaces in Singapore with Architours, and get your hands dirty with various crafting workshops. Join us in this celebration of architecture in our urban jungle and discover the joys and wonder of making!

Here's a round-up of our favourite programmes in Archifest 2019.

Woodworking with Local Tembusu Wood

Let’s get down to business - learn how to make a sustainable chopping board from a cross-cut slab of local tembusu wood, finished with food-grade beeswax from a local beekeeper! In this workshop, you’ll learn more about woodworking, such as different sanding techniques and how to apply finish.

Teacup Characters

You are what you drink from - this 3-hour workshop introduces participants to ceramics and the delicate skill of crafting a unique, personalized character. Learn how to pinch a teacup from scratch to create your very own cup!

Architours 2019

Get up close and personal with architectural gems in Singapore, and gain behind-the-scenes insights on design and construction from the architects who brought them to life. If you’ve always wanted to know the inside scoop on Singapore’s rich architecture, here’s your chance!

BEEP Craft-A-Toy: Craft | Share | Learn

If you’re bringing your children out for the weekend, how about letting them make their own toys? BEEP Craft-a-Toy encourages individuals to learn more about crafts through play with 3D printers. Encourage your children to hone their creative instincts, expand their imagination and instill in them a love for craft-making.

Why Lime Matters in Built Heritage Conservation

Find out how to safeguard Singapore’s beautiful heritage buildings and historical narratives for future generations. This sharing highlights the relevance of lime in historic buildings and why this traditional and cost-effective method remains superior to other treatments. It is organised in conjunction with the Architectural Heritage Season, an initiative by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA).

New Kintsugi

Breathe a new lease of life into your broken ceramics! This 2.5 hour workshop introduces participants to a modern interpretation of Kintsugi - a traditional Japanese technique that uses gold to repair broken ceramics, thus beautifying the mended cracks rather than disguising it. Participants are encouraged to bring along unwanted ceramics and recycle them into new pieces of art.

Take a closer look at Alexander McQueen, British craft architect and renowned fashion designer. Through exclusive interviews with his closest friends and family, recovered archives, exquisite visuals and music, McQueen is an authentic celebration and thrilling portrait of an inspired yet tortured fashion visionary.
