Planning a kitchen that Gordon Ramsay approves of doesn’t have to be a daunting challenge. Prior to embarking on a renovation, the most important step is to plan the layout and appliances that you intend to place in the kitchen.

1. Determine Your Kitchen Work Triangle And The Placement Of Your Refrigerator

A kitchen work triangle is the imaginary line drawn between the three most use point which are refrigerator (storage), sink (washing and preparation) and stove (cooking). The goal of a good kitchen work triangle is to place these common work sites apart in the most efficient distance, and minimise traffic in the work zone for convenient shuffling as you prepare your meals.

Notice where the refrigerator is being placed in these layouts? These are the five classic layouts, and each layout has its own benefits.

  • Single wall and gallery kitchens include one or two continuous runs of cabinet for optimal storage space
  • L-shaped kitchens that intersect in a corner of the kitchen offer homeowners optimal counter top space
  • U-shaped kitchens that surround you on the three sides ensure everything is within easy reach
  • Island feature is desired by many as it is highly versatile, either serving as a breakfast table, baking counter, or simply a place for the homeowners to mingle with guests

2. How To Measure The Size And Space To Fit Your Refrigerator

You may have an idea of what type of refrigerator you want to buy, but there are essential steps to take before making your final decision. A common misconception is that any refrigerator will fit the space you currently have in the kitchen simply by measuring the height, depth and width of the fridge.

Other dimensions that need to be included are the door opening space, hinge side door space as well as the ventilation space - 2cm on both sides and 3cm at the top and at the back is a good rule to follow. Don’t forget the cleaning space! As straightforward as it sounds, the space you need for getting the refrigerator in the house (for this, remember to measure your main and kitchen door).

3. Understand Your Family Requirements

Keep the trusty guidelines below in mind as you choose a fridge that’s just the right size for your family.

4. Deciding On The Type Of Refrigerator

Just as you wouldn’t want to be hobbling around in the wrong shoe size, you wouldn’t want to have the wrong sized refrigerator as well. It is important to consider your household’s needs prior to purchasing your refrigerator. Besides, a poorly made decision will not be cost efficient either. Rising in popularity amongst homeowners are refrigerators with a water or ice dispenser. Should you do decide to purchase one, be mindful that your refrigerators will need to be accessible to a water line at the back of the fridge.

5. Understand The Energy Consumption

A refrigerator easily consumes the most amount of electricity in comparison to other household appliances, so it makes sense to pick one that is energy-efficient. The energy consumption is directly proportional to the size of your refrigerator, and top freezer model fridges tend to be more energy-efficient. Always keep a lookout for the Energy Star rating – a refrigerator unit with more ticks equates to higher energy efficiency- something you will be thankful for in the long run!

It is important to familiarise yourself with the different measurements of energy ratings used for appliances.
