Thanks to the abundance of windows... and a little inspiration from HGTV.
After countless hours of watching HGTV during the pandemic, Amira and her family knew they wanted their next home to embrace a cosy farmhouse aesthetic. So, when they bought their Executive Maisonette in Yishun, they set out to create a farmhouse-style home.
Their interior designer from Jesigns Interior Design initially suggested going for styles that are more common in Singapore, like modern or Scandinavian, instead. But the family stuck to their vision, even tackling DIY projects like painting the staircase and creating a stunning feature wall in the living room to make the house their own.

Originally a walled-off area, the recessed balcony was opened up to flood the entrance with natural light. Sliding doors with subtle arch details lead into the main living spaces, immediately setting the tone for the home’s open and welcoming feel.

Additionally, all non-structural walls on the first floor were hacked — including those of the original study room and bedroom — to create a spacious, open-concept layout that seamlessly connects the kitchen, living, and dining areas.
Farmhouse-style kitchen
The kitchen, though, is where the farmhouse charm really shines. At its heart is a large central island that doubles as a workspace and gathering spot for the family.
Shaker-style cabinets in a soft vanilla hue pair perfectly with gold hardware accents, adding a touch of elegance to the farmhouse theme.
And it’s packed with practical features as well, like a built-in sink and dishwasher at the island, plus a handy pot filler above the stove.
Dining area
Further in, the dining area is bathed in natural light, thanks to full-length windows that stretch even higher than usual because the home is on the top floor. The Scandinavian-style dining table keeps things simple, letting the view take centre stage.
Living room
Next to the dining area is the living room, where the family opted for minimal furnishings. A modular sofa that seats eight anchors the space — one carefully chosen with their large extended family in mind, given that Amira home is often where they gather.
But the highlight of the room is undoubtedly the DIY lattice feature wall. Painted and constructed by the family, it was a chance to leave their own mark on the home.
Hand-painted stairs
The family’s creativity doesn’t stop at the feature wall. The staircase connecting the two floors is another DIY project they took on together. They kept its original design for its farmhouse charm and repainted it themselves. To tie it into the rest of the home’s theme, they added gold skirting — a subtle but effective detail.
To elevate the look further, a modern spiral chandelier hangs above the staircase, making the space a standout feature of the home.
Laundry area on the second floor
On the second floor, the hallway laundry area was created by reconfiguring the original layout, which previously had a pathway to the common toilet and part of a bedroom. By hacking down a wall and slightly reducing the bedroom size, the family carved out space for the washer and dryer.
This setup makes chores much easier, especially since all the bedrooms and wardrobes are on the same floor, saving countless trips up and down the stairs.
Master bedroom
Meanwhile, the master bedroom, with its French doors, adds a hint of elegance to the farmhouse-inspired space. You can’t really tell from the photos above, but the family added dusty pink accents here as a playful nod to their previous home that sported a black-and-pink theme “before Blackpink even existed!”
Bathrooms
Both bathrooms carry the farmhouse theme with their own unique spin.
Like other areas in the home, the master bathroom also has an interesting story to tell. Amira tells us that it was designed to pay homage to the black-and-pink colour theme their previous home used to sport, with dusty pink tiles from Hafary. And see if you can spot the whimsical gold butterfly lamp!
The common bathroom, on the other hand, features oversized tiles with gold accents and arched shower screens — both of which are recurring motifs we’ve seen throughout the home.
