First Look: Inside the New BTOs at Tengah Everyone is Talking About

June 4, 2024

Tengah is the new Punggol.

With thousands of units, a brand new MRT line and as a staple part of URA’s Master Plan for the West Region, Tengah is slated to become the next up-and-coming residential area for young families in Singapore.

And as it were, some residents of its pioneering estates have already moved in. Let’s have a look!

1. A super-sleek 5-room BTO that you’d mistake for a condo

Most HDB flats that look like condos often sport a modern luxe look with a ton of marble, but this one takes on an uber-modern approach with its minimalist aesthetic.

For one, all trunking and beams (AKA dead giveaways that you’re looking at an HDB flat) have been concealed so that the apartment looks extra sleek. We also love the nuances in how natural light bounces off the various shades of off-white surfaces in matte, as well as the synergy between the clean lines and curves for an air of understated elegance.

2. A calming 5-room BTO with an interesting use of the suggested study area

As a twist on the classic white-and-wood interior that involves light wood tones, the owners of this 5-room BTO made the choice to go with darker walnut tones instead. The result: bold contrasts and an inexplicable sense of deep calm.

Highlights include a full-sized circular mirror to visually enlarge the already-spacious communal area, along with a raised platform for a tatami-style coffee/cosy corner at the suggested study area.

Head’s up: Scandinavian interiors aren’t going away anytime soon, because they still remain the most cost-effective approach for a home that’s both functional and aesthetic.

In this example, only the necessary built-ins were included to keep renovation costs under $40,000. Additionally, both junior bedrooms have been left largely unfurnished to keep them as flexible spaces for the growing family’s needs.

Notwithstanding, we’d like to point out how the toilet roll holder niche doubles as a shower screen. Genius!

4. A cosy 3-room BTO at Plantation Grange with no lack of storage space

As homes are getting smaller, storage cannot be understated.

The good people at Divine & Glitz know this full well, adopting a galley layout for the kitchen so there’s no shortage of cabinetry. Meanwhile, the L-shaped walkway into the master bedroom is lined with carpentry and a vanity to optimise the use of the odd corner, making it a literal walk-in wardrobe – with no hacking required.

5. A warm and inviting BTO at Plantation Acres we could spend all day in

Space may be tight in this next example, but it’s got some workarounds to make it work.

For starters, the dining area comprises a cosy settee that doubles as a storage unit flushed against the wall. The bench on the opposite side, on the other hand, can be nested under the dining table to keep the communal area clutter-free when not in use.

Top it off with soft furnishings and warm accent lighting, we honestly wouldn’t mind staying in all weekend long.

6. A MUJI-esque 3-room BTO at Plantation Grange with more ‘secret’ doors than one

Sporting heaps of wood and shoji-style panels, this BTO at Plantation Grange is undoubtedly inspired by Japanese interior design.

And as though Japanese style interiors don’t look clean enough, this one even has pocket doors that conceal the master bedroom entrance, coupled by a modern take on shoji panels to cover the TV when not in use.

The only ‘downside’? You might have trouble locating everything if you’re a first-time guest!
