Live Large In A Small Space With These 4 Easy Steps

June 30, 2015

You may live in a small space, but there sure isn’t a need for it to feel that way. There are many things you can easily do that will give the illusion of space, or even create more tangible, physical space, which makes it doubly awesome! If you are a small space dweller who wants to know how to make the best of your cosy nest, this article is for you.

1. Light It Up

In a small space, good lighting and colours can really make a remarkable difference. Light is your best friend, so open up those curtains and let natural sunlight stream in through the windows.

To enhance the effect of depth, it is best to keep heavy furniture out of the sunlight’s way. In terms of the room’s colour scheme, stick to light-coloured walls and floors as they reflect light and give the room a much brighter, airier feel. It is no wonder then that monochromatic schemes in light hues work miracles with small spaces.

2. Get Organised

There is only so much stuff you can keep in a small space, which is why organising them and having proper storage places matter. Opt for built-in shelves or cupboards that offer you plenty of space to stow away your stuff, but keep it looking clean and clutter-free at the same time.

To free up more space, choose furniture that can be easily kept away such as a foldable dining table or pull-out sofa bed. Multifunctional furniture that double up as storage compartments are brilliant options to look out for too.

3. Tear That Wall

Open up your home by tearing down the interior walls to create a large, open-concept living space. Not only will this allow light to reach into more nooks and crannies that were previously deprived of light, it will also visually expand the size of the room.

If you are not quite ready to live a completely wall-less life, consider going for a full or partial partition with glass. Glass reflects light, which is wonderful for small spaces, and also integrates seamlessly into the design of the living space. Besides, what’s not to like about seeing everything that happens in a room without having to step into it?

4. Decor Matters

It’s all about the legs, and furniture with exposed legs can help give the illusion of spaciousness. A large and strategically placed mirror can also heighten the perception of roominess in a small space.

If you have many small decorative accents, it is best to keep them away and go for larger decorative accents such as a heavy statement vase or wall art piece instead, as small items can clutter and crowd a room. The same goes for heavier furniture such as sofas and armchairs, as having too many can make a small space look even smaller. Hence, it is wiser to go for one large, statement sofa – with legs.
