Big home, bigger inspiration.
With homes in Singapore getting smaller and smaller, many homeowners dream of securing a bigger space. But for this particular homeowner, that dream came true – in the form of a whopping 178 sqm jumbo flat in Woodlands.

If you didn’t know, a jumbo flat consists of a 3-room and 4-room flat due to oversupply back in 1989, thus creating one massive home. And this home certainly is no exception, with five (!) bedrooms, including the study.
It was certainly no small (pun unintended) feat for Taccuino Interior Studio to take on the task of renovating a huge space – but it’s safe to say that they succeeded, turning it into a stunning home inspired by Japanese architecture.
Let’s take a closer look:
The entryway, pre-renovation
Once a recess corridor sporting a dated interior, the entryway was transformed into a genkan-style foyer that sets the stage. Pebbled flooring with stepping stones lines the walkway, visually leading the eye toward a bonsai garden framed by a sculpted rock wall that creates texture.
You’ll also find several architectural details that fully lean into the traditional Japanese aesthetic: a circular window that overlooks the dining area, and a lattice window that draws in light from the entryway and into the home.
Of note is the smart glass panel that can turn opaque and transparent with a click of a button, giving the homeowners the flexibility to choose privacy or openness when needed.
To emphasise the space, the living room was kept simple, with minimal furnishings and a textured TV feature wall that adds visual interest without taking up floor space.
The star of the area, though, is the display cabinet. Inspired by shoji doors, its back panel features a translucent surface that softly diffuses light – just like the traditional Japanese paper screens.
Warm backlights draw attention to the area (and the pieces on display), making this a feature that is as practical as it is stunning.
Next to the living room, the dining area is framed by a wall arch fitted with lights along the edges. Functioning as a demarcation from the living room, it adds a soft architectural touch that echoes the home’s Japandi aesthetic while maintaining an open flow.

Housed within a long, narrow space, the galley-style kitchen boasts tons of storage and countertop space, ensuring that the homeowners have ample room for their things as well as for food prep.
The common toilet – consisting of two bathrooms – was expanded to create a larger, more comfortable space. Now, it has a spacious wet and dry area that allows for better movement and flow – a far cry from the originally tiny space.
Compared to the rest of the home, the master bedroom suite adopts a darker, modern luxe look for a more indulgent, relaxing vibe.
The homeowners also opted to use the adjacent spare bedroom as a walk-in wardrobe. Furnished with a full-length wardrobe and vanity, this area also consists of a jewelry island with cleverly hidden storage that keeps the look neat.
Fun fact: the full-height ‘mirror’ is actually another smart glass panel that can turn reflective and transparent; it doubles as a set of doors for their display cabinet that shows their collection of luxury bags.
Big, old homes tend to be trickier to renovate, but this Woodlands jumbo flat now boasts a uniquely stylish space that is both practical and comfortable.
It’s a testament to Taccuino Interior’s planning and attention to detail that they were able to turn this old resale flat into a timeless sanctuary!
