When it comes to renovating a kid's playroom, finding the best toy storage solutions, choosing stylish and durable furniture, and creating an elevated look that complements the rest of your home can be quite a challenge. This is because playrooms are frequently associated with colourful designs and whimsical patterns that don't always match with the rest of your home.
If you want to create a playroom that is as beautiful as the rest of your home, we have some design tips and decorating ideas that are thoughtful enough to please any sophisticated design enthusiast while also being fun and interesting for the kids!
1. Define the areas
Defining areas for various activities helps to keep a playroom organised. You could, for example, designate one corner for reading, another for playing board games, and the other for storage. Once you've defined these zones, they'll have more space to move around and do different activities, rather than playing in the middle of the room, which disrupts traffic flow.
Take inspiration from this playroom created by Vault Design Lab. It is packed with activities divided into different zones to keep the kids entertained all day. There’s a dedicated space for reading, a role-playing area, and an area where the kids can easily access and store their toys.
2. Create an art and craft corner
If your children enjoy arts and crafts, create a space where they can let their imaginations run wild. Including an art and craft area in your home is also a fun interactive design element that will foster memories and inspire personal expression. All you need is a set of tables and chairs, some art supplies, and a corkboard where they can display their artwork.
Take a cue from this residence, where MIL Design & Construction installed a large white corkboard, a built-in cabinet to display and store art supplies, and a simple wooden desk and chairs to create a space for crafting. A geometric rug helps to zhuzh up the room, while task lighting brightens the space and helps the kids stay focused on their craft projects.
3. Add comfortable seating
Comfortable seating is essential in a playroom because children spend the majority of their time in this room doing various activities such as watching TV, napping, playing, and even snacking. If you have a small space, keep it simple with a few small bean bag chairs and a rug, or fill a large playroom with a variety of fun pieces like floor cushions, a sofa, and large stuffed animals.
Consider The Grid Studio's playroom design, in which a throw pillow and pouffe provide cosy seating while watching TV, napping, or reading. This simple seating solution is also a great alternative to bulky furniture that does not take up a lot of floor space and can be easily stored in a cupboard when not in use. Meanwhile, the round floor rug provides a soft place to play as well as some underfoot comfort.
4. Provide ample storage space
Storage is the one thing you should take seriously in a playroom. Kids' playrooms require a lot of storage space so that even the most disastrous of messes can be easily hidden from plain sight.
Copy this playroom design, in which Interior Hunters installed a built-in cabinet with open and closed shelving to display toys and books while concealing anything less than aesthetically pleasing. Floor-to-ceiling built-ins across an entire wall create a neat and organised look while taking up little floor space, allowing more space to move around the room. A play table and chair, as well as a chalkboard, keep little ones entertained, while a bright rug adds a playful touch to the room.
5. Allow for some empty space
Children enjoy jumping and running around in open spaces, so don't overcrowd the playroom with too much furniture. Allow plenty of space for them to run around and play.
Take a cue from Pocket Square's playroom, which features an abundance of hidden storage while still leaving plenty of floor space for the kids to do various fun-filled activities and games. Our favourite part of the playroom is the wall-to-wall window seat with fluffy pillows, which provides a cosy spot for curling up with a book.
6. Create a space for climbing
Kids love to climb on things, so make a space for them to work off some of their excess energy.
A pint-size hangout space like this one from EMPT Studio is an excellent example of a climbing area that adds an extra dose of enjoyment to the kids' play area. A small dead space in this family room is transformed into a usable and stylish section for kids with a padded seat. Kids will need to climb a short ladder to gain access to this cosy play area!
7. Deck out their bedroom
If you don't have enough space in your home for a play area, you can arrange your child's bedroom to accommodate both sleep and play.
Take inspiration from this kid's room, where SQFT Space Design and Management constructed a built-in adventure-land for sleeping and playing. The upper-level play area is only accessible by a ladder, and the night sky wallpaper creates a whimsical atmosphere in the room. The designer also installed a built-in storage unit to keep toys hidden while keeping the room clean and uncluttered.
