Great style doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag!

Creative interior design and renovations do not have to cost a bomb! In fact, with a budget of RM100,000 (or less) and the help of a talented interior designer, you can transform your home into a stylish, practical living space you’ve always dreamed of.

Here are eight affordable renovation projects that you’ll have to see to believe:

1. 2-bedroom condominium in Bukit Jalil City (Renovation Cost RM40,000)

This 650 sqft condominium gets a stylish contemporary makeover, proving that you don’t necessarily need a huge budget to create a stunning home—just RM40,000 did the trick! The open-plan dining area stands out with a gorgeous feature wall that adds a touch of elegance, perfectly complementing the modern luxe design theme. Meanwhile, the clean-lined furniture and built-ins make the space look effortlessly put together.

In the bedrooms, rich shades of olive green and emerald blue wall bring warmth and character, acting as bold focal points. Soft backlighting and stylish wall sconces add to the cosy, high-end vibe, proving that good lighting can make all the difference!

2. 2-bedroom condominium in Desa ParkCity (Renovation Cost RM65,000)

With a modest budget of only RM65,000, this 1,000 sqft condominium in Desa Park City, beautifully fuses the minimalist elegance of Japandi with the eclectic charm of Bohemian design.

The home embraces neutral tones and cosy, well-curated furniture, creating a warm and laid-back ambiance that feels both stylish and inviting. To enhance its overall aesthetic, the designer incorporates organic materials like rattan, wood, and unique Peranakan tiles, adding depth and character to the space.

In the master bedroom, a striking feature wall behind the bed is finished with limewash paint, introducing a subtle texture that enhances the room’s serene appeal. Soft, curved details further balance the design, lending a gentle, organic flow that makes the space feel even more inviting.

3. 2 bedroom condominium in Cheras (Renovation cost RM75,000)

With a RM75,000 budget, this 840 sqft condominium has been thoughtfully transformed with a minimalist design that maximises both style and functionality. The owner prioritised carpentry work, ensuring smart, built-in solutions to enhance the space. The kitchen, for example, features custom-built cabinets, seamlessly separating the dry kitchen from the dining area. Clever hidden storage is integrated throughout, from bench seating to vanity mirrors, creating a sleek, uncluttered look that makes the home look neat and organised.

The colour palette of light wood, off-white, and grey, paired with warm lighting, creates visual harmony throughout the home, while maintaining a tranquil and cohesive atmosphere.

4. 4-bedroom condominium in Desa Petaling (Renovation Cost: RM85,000)

With a budget of RM85,000 this 1,219 sqft condominium is designed for both functionality and style, featuring a built-in L-shaped peninsula that seamlessly integrates with the dining table. This clever layout connects the dry kitchen and dining area, optimising space while creating an inviting setting for social gatherings.

Throughout the home, dark wood tones, paired with shades of grey and brown, create a timeless, sophisticated ambiance. In contrast, the kids' bedroom embraces a playful, cheerful vibe, with pastel tones that infuse the space with warmth, joy, and a touch of whimsy.

5. 3-bedroom condominium in Johor Bharu (Renovation cost RM87,700)

With a budget of RM87,800, 946 Design has transformed this 1200 sqft condominium in Johor into a cosy bachelor pad that exudes sophistication through black-themed design. The dark hues are not limited to the walls but extend to the ceiling, furniture, built-ins, and even the curtains and blinds. White tile floors provide a sharp contrast, helping to break up the intensity of the deep hues while adding spatial depth and a sense of openness to the home.

The heavy use of black makes the space look very elegant and cosy. The designer also made sure not to compromise on quality by installing Blum products (known for their high-quality closing mechanisms) for the cabinets and drawers. This attention to detail allows the space to feel both refined and practical, offering a bachelor’s retreat that’s stylish, comfortable, and built to last!

Money-saving tip: When renovating, evaluating where to save and where to splurge can help keep your budget in check without sacrificing quality. For instance, invest in durable, fitted furniture that will withstand wear and tear, reducing the need for frequent replacements. By prioritising key elements, you’ll ensure your renovation is both cost-effective and long-lasting.

6. 3-bedroom duplex in Puchong (Renovation Cost RM90,000)

This 1,861 sqft duplex in Puchong has been thoughtfully renovated to blend minimalist and Scandinavian design, prioritising simplicity and tranquility. The minimalist aesthetic is evident from the entrance, where a curved arch adds character to the otherwise long and understated entrance.

A cohesive palette of walnut and muted tones can be seen throughout the home, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that exudes comfort and calm.

To maximise natural light, YJD Interior Design capitalises on the double-height ceiling by keeping window treatments to a minimum. This approach not only enhances brightness but also creates a sense of openness, making the duplex feel bright and airy.

Another noteworthy transformation is the clever conversion of dead space under the stairs into a functional home office. Custom-built counters and loose chairs fit seamlessly within the compact nook, creating a practical yet stylish workspace that optimises every inch of available space.

7. 3-bedroom condominium at Jalan Segambut (Renovation Cost RM100,000)

With a budget of RM100,000, the design challenge was to create a cohesive, functional home that also feels spacious despite the home’s limited square footage of 1,000 sqft. DE: Kreate Dezain Studio managed to accomplish this with a thoughtful combination of lighting, furniture, wall panels, and a blend of light and dark tones that ensures the space feels complete and well-balanced.

As a collector enthusiast, the owner required ample space to showcase his wine and liquor collection, which the designer has achieved by integrating floor-to-ceiling shelves and glass-door cabinets, ensuring the collection is prominently displayed while maximising every square foot.

Rich brown wall panels, accented with backlighting, add a touch of luxury to each room, while low-profile furniture leaves more open vertical space, making the home feel airier and more spacious.

8. 2-bedroom condominium in Cheras (Renovation Cost RM100,000)

This 857 sqft condominium was given a complete makeover by Big Design Interior, and is now a charming contemporary home with a retro touch.

One major improvement is enclosing the original open-concept kitchen with glass doors, preventing smoke and grease from spreading throughout the home during heavy cooking while maintaining an open and airy feel. To maximise space, a stacked washer and dryer setup addresses laundry needs without taking up too much room. Adding to the condo’s retro charm, the designer incorporated olive green cabinetry with brass hardware, complemented by patterned tiles that bring a nostalgic character to the space.

In the master bedroom, thoughtful design choices further enhance functionality and aesthetics. It comes with a platform bed with a floating effect, while floor-to-ceiling built-in cabinets provide ample storage without overwhelming the room, maintaining a clean and uncluttered atmosphere. It also lends the illusion of a high ceiling. A hidden entrance to the en-suite bathroom adds a touch of sophistication and seamless integration, ensuring that the space remains both practical and visually appealing.
