4-Room HDB Layout Planning Made Easier With These Ideas

June 4, 2019

Previously, we have tackled layout concerns for 3-room HDBs, now let us help you with your 4-room flats.

Though there is more legroom, space is still a huge concern, especially for those who are planning to live with family. Here are 6 design solutions based on common 4-room floor plans!

1. Build a false ceiling to demarcate your communal zones

While open communal zones may not necessarily be your "thing", it's a feature that's commonplace in most BTOs. Luova Project Services cleverly divides the spaces up with a false ceiling. In line with the whole Japanese-minimalist aesthetic, the feature is outlined with strips of wood.

The bedroom was also repurposed – in its place is a brand new studio!

2. Conceal your household shelter and get more storage space!

Though the household shelter is a design eyesore, there are strict rules in place when it comes to renovating it.

Work around the restrictions by building outwards with cabinetry – not only does it conceal the bomb shelter, it offers additional storage should you need it, just like how Couple Abode built a full-height one complete with a mirror.

3. Create a convertible kitchen with bi-fold windows

If your kitchen sees intensive use, consider using bi-fold windows sat atop a half-wall. This way, you can keep a lid on the cooking fumes and ventilate the space when you’re done cooking up a storm.

Weiken makes full use of the convertible kitchen by placing a dining set close by, making it easy for the homeowners to plate and serve.

4. Flush all your carpentry to the sides

Consider the placement of your carpentry really carefully – bulky in nature, they can make your walkways look and feel narrow.

Besides flushing all the storage units to the sides of the walls, Ciseern also builds them outwards, cleverly turning open spaces into private nooks. Further in, an additional wall was raised in the master bedroom too.

5. Expanding your entertainment centre

Not enough legroom in the living room? Convert your guest bedroom into your dining area by hacking down the walls then laying tables and chairs for entertaining.

Starry Homestead takes it a step further, demarcating areas by switching out the flooring around the dining area for tiles that match the kitchen backsplash. Just like our previous examples, the household shelter was concealed with full-height storage for a truly polished look.

6. Tweaks to visually enlarge your space

To amplify your space, consider removing full walls. Zenith Arc partially removes the bedroom wall in this home, installs a glass one in its place and elongated the kitchen by combining it with the service yard.

These modifications are then complemented with a neutral palette that makes the home look brighter, more airy and larger.
