7 Rules To Look Out For When Designing Your Dream Wardrobe

September 29, 2016

One of the biggest headaches for homeowners? Having enough space to keep all your clothes, shoes, accessories and much more. The solution is naturally a custom-designed wardrobe so that you can create an efficient and organised wardrobe the way you like it. Plus, one that is properly designed will fit into your home design as well as lifestyle without looking out of place. Here are seven rules on how to properly plan your custom-designed wardrobe.

1. Plan how you want to store your belongings

This is probably the first rule when it comes to custom-designed wardrobe – what are you planning to store and how? Will you be folding your clothes and storing them on shelves or are you planning to store them via hanging racks? What about shoes and accessories?

To properly plan this, group your items based on their dimensions. For example, storing long dresses would require a taller storage. Also, plan the space for specific items, like your bags and shoes. Think of width, length and depth as well. All seems too confusing? Speak to your contractor or designer; tell them what you need and work together in planning how to create your dream wardrobe.

2. Think of double- and single-hang sections

Shirts, blouses and slacks belong on double hangs while dresses, long coats and jackets normally need single hangs. So if you have a lot of dresses, you are better off including more single hangs to fit everything in. Don’t have many of either? Then plan your wardrobe with more double-hang sections to maximise your storage space.

3. Consider an island

Not only do they look impressive but it can come in handy as well – especially if you have a lot of accessories! Islands serve as proper storage space for little items like cufflinks, jewellery, ties and belts, making them easily accessible. But remember, including an island in your wardrobe also means sacrificing a bit of clearance space. Work out with your designer to see if an island fits into your design or not – you don’t want a too-small island that serves no purpose but takes up space!

4. Dealing with corners

Corners can be cumbersome and tricky. They are even more complicated when it comes to custom-designed wardrobes, as corners give you less space to work with. The best approach is to utilise as much space as possible – you can include corner shelves to hang clothes, store purses or bags. Corners also help you create a more seamless wardrobe design. Speak to your designer to see how you can best incorporate corners in your design.

Don’t have a space for corner shelves? You can have your panels overlap the adjacent wall. But keep in mind that this may make the area harder to access so keep items like winter coats or luggage in these “hidden” spots.

5. Don’t forget the shoes!

A dream wardrobe lets you store your shoes in a nice display – all 99 pairs of them! But realistically, most custom-designed wardrobes have only a rack or two for your footwear. If this is the case, make sure they are big enough to comfortably store the shoes you wear often. But if you have space to play around with, think of dedicating an entire section just for shoes! Just make sure to have shelves in different heights – higher shelves for boots and lower ones for sandals.

6. And your accessories!

Bags, ties, purses, jewellery – these things need a space in your wardrobe too so make sure to plan proper shelves and racks to keep them organised. Belt and tie racks can be compact and mounted to any dead space you may have along walls. You can also create racks to hang your purses so that you can easily access them to quickly put your outfits together. As for smaller accessories like jewellery, think of trays that fit into your drawers with neat compartments – this helps to organise the many jewellery you might have. Plan to place the tray in a drawer near your vanity mirror.

7. Find room for a seat

There’s no point having a beautiful wardrobe complete with floor to ceiling mirrors if you can’t get dressed in it! Plan a seating spot where you can put on your shoes, button up your shirts, smooth down your dress and so on. Opt for a free-standing bench – this way you can move it around or even change after two years. Place it along an unused wall in your wardrobe facing a mirror.
