Luxury Hotels Through The Lens Of The Shutterwhale

April 13, 2017

What makes a trip unforgettable? Beyond the captivating sights and sounds, the spaces we stay in abroad are just as important in sparking our wanderlust.

Travelling is a sweet escape, and the unparalleled luxury of a hotel suite just makes it even better - no wonder so many wish recreate the experience at home, emulating that upscale, 'hotelesque' look.

Their source of inspiration? Envy-inducing Instagram shots, courtesy of luxury hotel photographer/traveller, The Shutterwhale. Featuring sumptuous hotel interiors from all over the globe, Mark (AKA the man behind The Shutterwhale) shares his favourite hotel looks to snag for your private sanctuary.

1. Conrad Tokyo

Mark (M): The design of the rooms at the Conrad Tokyo feature the perfect combination of minimalism and traditionalism. By accentuating the right details (no matter how subtle), you can create cohesiveness within different design elements, like this bedroom. I also love how clean and clutter-free the whole room is and the calming vibe it exudes.

2. Grand Hyatt Hong Kong

M: Apart from the amazing view of the Victoria Harbour that the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong suite looks out to, the muted yet contemporary aesthetic creates an inviting space that feels comfortable to live in. I particularly admire the contrast from different surfaces and textures, and more importantly, the use of semi-partitions to temporarily divide and compartmentalise the various living spaces.

3. InterContinental Singapore

M: The rooms here at the InterContinental Singapore combine the best of old and new-world charm. Earthly tones and warm lighting create a homely atmosphere that's perfect (even for road warriors) to spend time in, while the gold accents along the cornices allow the space to exude a sense of elegance.

4. Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong

M: In my opinion, Peranakan elements are one of the hardest to incorporate within a room or an enclosed space. While the individual components in this space are complex as standalone products, I love how they all seamlessly blend together at the Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong. The beautiful use of tiles and fabric cannot be better employed, producing a private alcove that is full of local taste, in a quirky, yet refined manner.

5. Anantara Seminyak Bali Resort

M: I have always preferred a darker scheme to more vibrant ones and the suites here at the Anantara Seminyak Bali Resort feature just that; A design that is simple yet contemporary. The understated hues and clean, organic lines allows users to focus on what's most important - the beauty of nature and the reconnection with one’s inner self.
