Why Are Dishwashers Becoming More Popular in Singapore’s Households?

October 25, 2024

TL;DR - reasons against having one are no longer holding up.

In an iconic scene in Fresh Off the Boat, Constance Wu’s character told her children that they would never use the dishwasher (after they found out that it was, in fact, not a glorified drying rack) because it’s “wasteful”.

Yet, more and more households in Singapore now have dishwashers.

So, do they actually “waste” water and electricity? And why are they becoming increasingly popular? Let’s have a look.

(P.S. there’s an exclusive Qanvast discount for Hitachi dishwashers at the end.)

Dishwashers can actually save you water and energy

Fresh Off the Boat may be fiction, but here’s a fact: a study by University of Bonn found that the average dishwasher takes 15 to 22L of water to wash a full load of dishes, while human subjects used an average of 103L. Similarly, these dishwashers used 1.0 to 2.0kWh of energy, whereas the human subjects used an equivalent of 2.5kWh.

Simply put, dishwashers use, in fact, 5 times less water and at least 25% less energy than washing dishes by hand! Wasteful? We think not.

And while the study may have taken place in Europe, the same concept can apply in your home. For example, Hitachi’s newly launched HDF-F158CVGB and HDF-F146VX models both have a 3-tick water efficiency rating by PUB, which equates to approximately 29L of water saved in 5 minutes compared to washing dishes under a running tap.

Dishwashers free up time for things that matter

Granted, a dishwasher will set you back by a few thousand dollars. But as the saying goes, time is money.

A dishwasher allows you to spend the rest of your night with your loved ones doing things you enjoy, like reading to the kids or catching the latest Netflix movie with your significant other.

These are moments you’ll never be able to get back. So, don’t just think about monetary costs of a dishwasher, think about the priceless memories you could be creating as well.

Another side benefit: those with skin conditions like eczema or contact dermatitis won’t have to worry about their skin flaring up because of contact with dish soap!

Dishwashers today aren’t as bulky or unsightly as they used to be

If you’re concerned about a dishwasher being bulky and/or ruining your kitchen aesthetic, that’s unlikely to be the case these days – at least not with Hitachi’s dishwashers.

For one, they fit snugly under the counter at 60x60x85cm. For another, they look really sleek in Glass Black (HDF-F158CVGB) and Pearl Inox (HDF-F146VX), blending in seamlessly into any modern kitchen, rather than sticking out like a sore thumb.

Jeff from The I-Plan Studio adds that the flat-fronted design without any protruding buttons makes it easy to match any kitchen interior, though he would suggest Glass Black for those going with modern luxe looks.

Dishwashers today come with functions to suit different needs

As a bonus, today’s dishwashers come with different functions that come in handy in specific situations and lifestyle preferences. Examples of these functions in Hitachi’s dishwashers include:

  • Intense Wash: For stubborn stains
  • Rapid 58: If you urgently need the dishes to be done (e.g. you forgot about them and have a party coming up), this speed-washes your dishes in 58 minutes
  • Half-Load: If you have a small household, or simply don’t like leaving dirty dishes unwashed for a few days as you wait for a full load to pile up. Available in HDF-F146VX only.

Other notable features include Glass Care for those with expensive/fragile dishware, Hygiene Care for those with young ones, as well as the Flexible Cutlery Drawer to accommodate cutlery of different sizes/quantities.
