Having recently been accredited with the SuperTrust badge which recognises only the best and most trustworthy interior design firms in Malaysia, Doubble Interior Associates is one of the rising stars in the interior design industry.
Despite being a newcomer to the interior design scene, the firm has managed to establish itself as a trusted interior design firm in Malaysia with numerous successful projects and glowing (verified) reviews, and it has grown from a team of four to a team of 33 in less than two years.
Driving the firm’s vision is CEO William Lim, who has 7 years of experience in the interior design and construction industry. We recently caught up with William to talk about how he and his team have worked their way to success, and how they strive to provide the best service to their clients.
Qanvast: Hi William! Tell us about your firm and what distinguishes it from other interior design firms in the market
William Lim (WL): Doubble Interior Associate is a Kuala Lumpur-based design and construction firm. Prior to establishing Doubble Interior Associates, I owned and operated Authors Interior Pte Ltd, an interior design firm based in Singapore, for four years. I returned to Malaysia during the pandemic in June 2020 to establish Doubble Interior Associates, and it has been growing since, despite the difficulties that Covid-19 has brought us.
What sets us apart from other interior design firms is that we strive for balance in all aspects of our business. We do not refer to ourselves as a premium interior design firm, nor do we refer to ourselves as a firm that closes deals with low prices and packages, because doing so would result in a loss of quality. We make sure that every cent our clients spend is well spent and that they are getting a design solution that is tailored to their specific needs.
Qanvast: How do you make sure that a space is tailored to your client's needs?
WL: Unlike other traditional interior design firms, we do not have a signature design style. We call ourselves a multi-chrome company because we are constantly on the lookout for new styles to study in order to be prepared for all of our client's needs and to ensure that a space is attuned to their needs.
Qanvast: What is your firm’s philosophy in designing spaces?
WL: As the name (Doubble) implies multiplication and extra, we strive to deliver more than expected in every aspect. Doubble is founded on three fundamental principles: Form, Function, and Sustainability.
Where do you and your team typically find your design inspiration from?
Nowadays, there are numerous ways to find design inspiration, including the most popular; Pinterest, Xiaohongshu, Tik Tok, You Tube, and magazines, among others.
Rather than looking for inspiration when you need it, I believe that the best inspiration comes from constantly being exposed to design ideas on a regular basis and allowing the ideas to stick with you. Your inspiration will appear naturally whenever you need it because you are already exposed to it on a daily basis.
Qanvast: How big is your team, and how would you describe the culture of your company?
WL: We are a team of 33 people, including myself and at Doubble Interior Associates, we practice the 'No Rules Rule' work principle. There are basically no rules here, so all employees have the flexibility to choose their own working hours, the number of leaves they want to take, and there are no claim limitations, as long as all employees act on the basis of the company's interest and as long as there is a result.
We believe that everyone has different strengths and weaknesses, so we focus on each individual strength to achieve results.
Qanvast: What is one of your favourite projects to date?
WL: I'd say our office in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur. It is designed in a rustic and minimalistic style, with the concept centred on the most common and raw materials that we have always used in renovations, such as wood, stones and steel. The overall design includes a mix of rough and smooth surfaces, with an emphasis on balance and harmony. Since the only way for natural light to enter the office is through the front windows, we chose white as the primary colour for the space to give it a brighter vibe.
Qanvast: Your firm must have a large number of clients. How many clients can your office accommodate at a time?
WL: We have a meeting room that can accommodate two groups of clients (or one large group), an island table, and a sofa area, allowing us to serve four groups of clients at once.
To be honest, there are times when more than four groups are present at the same time, so we have a system in place that requires all appointments in the office to be recorded in order to prevent this problem from occurring again.
Qanvast: What is your favourite part of the workplace, and why?
WL: The area between the living room and the meeting room is my favourite because this is where we frequently gather and play games, and as a boss, it makes me happy to see all of my employees happy under my roof!
Qanvast: What are Doubble Associate’s plans for the near future? Do you have any exciting things planned?
WL: Yes, we have big plans for the future, including expanding our business in Singapore, which was established earlier this year. We're also launching a crowdfunding campaign to find investors to help us grow our business.
Qanvast: Last but not least, tell us why homeowners should choose to renovate with your firm?
WL: There are numerous reasons why homeowners should entrust us with their home renovations. First and foremost, our firm often appears at the top of Qanvast interior design firms' recommendation lists or the first few sometimes. We also have a lot of genuine customer testimonials on our Facebook and Qanvast review pages. And having recently received the Qanvast SuperTtrust badge adds to our credibility as a reputable interior designer in Malaysia!
