Designer Spotlight: Yong Studio
Having experienced what it was like to not be given a chance to showcase her talent, Steph, the founder of Yong Studio, was determined for her interior design firm to be one where everyone’s voices can be heard. With the belief that mistakes have to be made before great ideas can be formed, Steph encourages her team to be willing to make mistakes as there’s no wrong or right in design. It is no wonder then that her team is extremely tight-knit and displays boundless enthusiasm for coming up with novel designs.
Qanvast: Tell us more about your business? How did it get started?
Steph (S): I have always believed you got to do what you love. As work is going to fill a large part of your life, the only way to be satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. I started work in a renovation company and I felt there were better opportunities to showcase my creative talent. Thus, I made the shift to designing homes as it was something that I was interested in.
Qanvast: How would you describe your company’s culture?
S: My company practices an open door policy where there is freedom for the designers to express their thoughts and ideas. I believe that as designers, we can only grow if we are put in an environment where we are most comfortable. With this in mind, our design studio is designed with a focus on teamwork and open communication. The open office space provides a relaxing environment for my team and fosters personal growth and learning in them.
Qanvast: What makes your firm distinctive from other interior design firms?
S: We put a priority on building a close relationship with our clients and understanding them well. The first step to creating a design after viewing a client’s space is to sit down with them and find out more about their lifestyle, their likes and dislikes, and their goals and dreams for the space. We will then set to work on building a home that articulates a client’s personality. At the same time, we also make sure that our design evokes a sense of comfort and that there is harmony and rhythm within the space.
Qanvast: Where do you get design inspirations?
S: To me, design is all about sense and human interactions. This is why when we design a certain place we will do research and travel around to feel and produce new ideas.
Qanvast: What is the most memorable project that you have worked on to date?
S: The Denai Alam project will always be etched into my memory. While I was building and designing it, my dad passed away. To add on to the pressure, my sub-contractor also passed away during this period. Rather than being overwhelmed by the sadness and the stress, I decided to put all my energy into completing this project and my efforts paid off. This project received widespread recognition locally and magazines such as Her World and RTM tv even featured this project in their pages. This project taught me that when one is motivated, nothing can get in the way of good design.
