Project Details
This residence is designed around the quiet beauty of the Japanese tokonoma — a traditional alcove that celebrates art,
craftsmanship, and intentional living. In Japanese culture, the tokonoma is more than a decorative feature; it is a spatial
philosophy that honours balance, impermanence, and the appreciation of singular, meaningful objects.
Dot Works reinterprets this timeless idea for a modern home, creating a living environment that feels calm, grounded, and deeply
personal.
The project is guided by three core principles:
1. Simplicity with Purpose
Clean lines, muted tones, and natural finishes form the foundation of the space. Each element is thoughtfully placed to
maintain visual clarity and promote a sense of serenity.
FIRM’S DESIGN ETHOS/PHILOSOPHY:
2. Curated Moments
Instead of overwhelming the interior with decoration, the design focuses on select pieces — art objects, bespoke
joinery, crafted lighting — allowing them to be appreciated fully, just as a tokonoma highlights a single treasured item.
3. Soft Transitions & Flow
Spaces are connected through gentle transitions, filtered light, and subtle textural contrasts. This creates a rhythmic
movement throughout the home, echoing the quiet poise of traditional Japanese architecture.
SPECIAL DESIGN FEATURE:
The palette emphasises tactile materials: warm timber, stone, textured walls, and woven elements. These materials age
gracefully over time, reflecting the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi — finding beauty in natural variations and
imperfection. Ambient lighting enhances the sense of intimacy, shaping shadows that bring depth and soul to the
interior.
SPECIAL MATERIALS:
Beyond aesthetics, the design supports a slower, more mindful way of living. Spaces are crafted to encourage
reflection, conversation, and the appreciation of small daily rituals — whether enjoying tea, reading, or simply sitting in
silence.
The completed residence stands as a modern interpretation of tokonoma philosophy, reshaped through Dot Works’
perspective. A home that feels calm yet expressive, minimal yet warm — an interior that celebrates stillness in a busy
world. This residence is designed around the quiet beauty of the Japanese tokonoma — a traditional alcove that celebrates art,
