6-3-1: The Secret To Injecting Colours At Home
Ever wondered how some people can just add a pop of yellow or a drop of turquoise and transform a space into something stylish? Let’s face it. Not all of us have a degree in design. But that shouldn’t stop us from adding a little colour into our homes. The key to this is really as simple as 1-2-3 or in this case, 6-3-1.
More specifically, 60% + 30% + 10%. Which, in decorating-speak means, 60% of the room should be in a dominant colour, 30% in secondary colour and 10% using an accent colour.
Step 1: Anchor The Room With A Base Colour
The rule simply states that 60% of the colour should be a main colour to the entire room. This would mean choosing one shade to be the base for the largest area in the room. Typically, this would be the walls, floor, ceiling, curtains or on the largest furniture in the room. This colour acts as a backdrop and unifying theme for the space.

Step 2: Complement With A Secondary Colour
Next, choose a colour that could complement the main colour and use it on half as much space. This colour should be different from the main colour and can be used on cabinets, wall panels, bedding or even the carpet.

Step 3: Add Hints Of Fun Into Your Space
Lastly, and possibly the best part of this process is the remaining 10%. Go bold with your accent colour by adding it to your throw pillows or artwork. Work it into just one drawer, or on your lamp and sit back and marvel at how stylish the room now looks.

Additional Step: 110% For The Adventurous
If you’ve mastered the 6-3-1 rule and you’re feeling a little more confident about mixing colours, there’s more! Add another 10% accent colour to jazz up the space. Use varying shades of blue, or better yet, throw in that other fushia stool you’ve been eyeing. Because sometimes, one cheeky colour just isn’t enough.
