A Family of 5 Transformed Their 3-Storey into a Modern French Retreat

The result? A stunning modern French-inspired home that’s as elegant as it is liveable, proving that classic style and everyday comfort can go hand in hand. We caught up with project manager Ms. Fun, who gave us the inside scoop on how her team transformed a blank canvas into a chic, functional space in just 12 weeks.

About the homeowners and their home

Our clients are a paediatrician and dentist couple and they are proud parents to three young daughters. They chose TTDI Heights as a place to settle down because it is conveniently located close to the KL city centre and nearby schools, restaurants, and shopping malls.

Their new home is a spacious 4,220 sqft, 3-storey semi-D that was completed in mid-2024. It comes with 6 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, and even a private lift. But since it is a brand new property, they needed a full renovation before moving in. That’s when they reached out to Qanvast for free quotes, and that’s how they found us!

About their chosen design style for the home

From the get-go, we clicked instantly with the clients. They had a clear vision of what they wanted, which made the whole process smooth and collaborative. The best part? They appreciate both good design and practical layout, just like us.

Their goal was to create a home that feels elegant and timeless, yet cosy and practical for everyday family life. They were all about bright, airy vibes, soft colour palettes, smart storage solutions, and spaces that would work well for their three little daughters.

After going through the client’s requirements and mood board, we proposed a modern French design that balances classic elegance with modern comfort. To make the space feel more personal, we gave it a thoughtful twist by weaving in elements that are commonly found in Malay homes such as a separate wet and dry kitchen, a farmhouse sink and ample built-in storage. We also introduced subtle cultural touches, like gold accents, which are often favoured in Malay interiors.

The colour palette for this home leans into soft neutrals and pastels. Think creams, whites, and light greys, gently accented with muted blues and blush tones. It’s a dreamy combo that sets the tone for a calm, elegant, and airy vibe which is perfect for that modern French look we were going for.

About the house renovation

You get a feel of the modern French aesthetic the moment you step through the door. In the living room, we introduced a custom TV cabinet and a TV back panel with classic wainscoting, a signature detail in any true French-inspired home. Gold-accented wall lamps add just the right touch of elegance, while timeless pieces like a marble coffee table and a leather sofa anchor the space. We also layered in cosy elements like throw pillows and blankets to make the room feel warm and inviting.

Adjacent to the living room is the dining area, where we created a false wall divider to provide separation between these two spaces while lending a sense of continuity and openness. We likewise added classic wainscoting on the wall, along with a vintage chandelier with gold accents to give the room a similar French-inspired look.

Originally, the house came with a small kitchen, but since the owners love to cook, we decided to extend the kitchen by ‘borrowing’ some space from the backyard to create a separate wet and dry kitchen. We also redesigned the wall with an arched opening and installed an arched door to divide the two spaces.

Both the wet and dry kitchens feature cabinets in matching tones and materials, keeping the design cohesive throughout. In the wet kitchen, we installed full-height cabinets, a dish drying rack and a sink for washing dishes.

To maximise storage, we installed full-height cabinets in the dry kitchen, along with a farmhouse sink, which is a popular choice among many Malay homeowners. For added functionality, we included a peninsula fitted with bar stools and pendant lighting, creating an area for the family to gather or enjoy casual meals together.

The laundry room is bright and airy, thanks to a skylight that floods the space with natural light. We added a full-height cabinet to keep all the essentials neatly tucked away, making the room look neat and organised. There’s also a laundry sink and adjustable hanging rod, which makes it convenient for the owner to dry their clothes indoors.

The modern French theme flows seamlessly into the master bedroom. The grey walls are dressed with full wainscoting panels and elegant wall sconces, setting the tone with that unmistakable French charm. We also added a study desk beside a blue-toned bedframe, which brings a nice pop of colour and a touch of unexpected visual interest to the space.

The master bedroom comes with a walk-in wardrobe, where we installed full-height cabinets to maximise storage space. We also incorporated smart storage solutions using high-quality pull-out baskets and organisers. These keep everything tidy and within easy reach, which is perfect for the family’s busy lifestyle.

Since the family enjoys reading in their free time, we designed a cosy mini library right next to the family hall. It features floor-to-ceiling bookcases to accommodate their growing collection and a built-in window bench perfect for relaxed reading. I especially love how the natural light floods the space during the day, making it an inviting nook to unwind and get lost in a good book.
