Design Dept: Professionals with a Penchant for Innovative Style
Is your home or commercial space yearning for a touch of incomparable architecture and design? Then the team at Design Dept are the folks you’ll want on your side. But what makes them so special? Find out with this in-depth look at the inner workings of a highly-professional team.
It’s a beautiful thing to see perfectly inventive design come to life! To get the results you want however, you’ll need a design team that actually puts in the work as it’s not all pretty accents and pastels that make for top-notch interior design.
In fact, there’s a painstaking technical side to it all – thankfully, Design Dept goes above and beyond to thoroughly understand a space in numbers before any of the artsy stuff begins.
The Men at Work
Yuwei and former classmate Keith Ho decided years ago to go into business for themselves forming Design Dept which achieved monumental growth through humble word-of-mouth marketing.
With their reputation for impeccable designs growing, the company caught the attention of a public listed firm (Key Alliance Group Berhad) and now operate as its subsidiary.
Design Dept is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with as professional recognition has been received through a number of accolades and award nominations in recent years.
Design Dept’s A-Team
The talent at Design Dept are young and imaginative, working within a light and relaxed atmosphere.
The team, small and impactful, are encouraged to freely explore the depths of their creative side – and it shows in over 50 of the firm’s immaculate design projects.
Driving the Design
You’ll notice that with the interiors designed by Yuwei and gang, a clean, sleek look is always present.
This can be traced back to Yuwei’s partiality to linear and perfectly symmetrical designs, whenever possible.
At other times, geometrical designs help keep the ‘logical’ balance of a space intact. Nothing about the architecture, furnishings or even lighting goes off tangent when each project is approached with this level of fascinating mathematics.
Yuwei credits his former mentor Brian Quirk (of Q&A) for instilling such a perspective that follows his work to this day. In his book, the technical aspects of design supersede the aesthetics.
The Pride and Joy
It’s really no wonder that CHAZE takes the cake for being Design Dept’s most exciting project to date. This speakeasy lounge continues to be a treat for the senses with contemporary design that has taken extra care with space planning. Its circulation patterns are perfect, allowing patrons to seamlessly move through.
You’ll also see playful additions like a ping pong table (yes, you read that right!) and colour-rich plush seating for its karaoke area amidst luxury chesterfields. The sleek and stylish bar has an unexpectedly rustic lodge feel with deep wood tones and natural browns all around.
CHAZE speaks to the immense creative faculties inherent with Design Dept and shows just how much of the heart (and mind) went into the precise choices of accents, lighting, colours, materials and motifs.
So now you know – great design does not happen by accident – it takes a gifted team like the one at Design Dept to expertly make it happen.Image Credit : Design Dept
