Hong Kong Couple Transforms 2700 Sqft KL Home into Dream Holiday Space

September 25, 2024

A residence designed to accommodate guests.

Drawn by the balance of tranquility and vibrancy that Malaysia offers was one of the main reasons why a family from Hong Kong chose to purchase a high-end condominium in Desa Park City as their holiday home.

To bring their vision to life, they enlisted the expertise of KL-based interior design firm Glassic Conzept, which they discovered through a Google search.

About the homeowners and their home

"A married couple with a 22-year-old daughter had been searching for a vacation home to escape the fast-paced daily life in Hong Kong. During their property hunt, they discovered this high-rise condominium in Desa ParkCity and were instantly captivated by its family-friendly atmosphere and scenic surroundings, including a nearby lake and lush greenery.

Completed in 2023, the property spans 2,700 sqft and it comes with 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms," says Fun, project manager at Glassic Conzept.

About their chosen design style for the home

"During our initial discussion with the owner, Kathy, she wanted the space to feel both spacious and cosy, combining timeless elegance and luxury with modern simplicity. She has a keen eye for detail and enjoys keeping everything neat and organised.

We proposed a modern luxury design for the home, utilising a black-and-white colour scheme to evoke a sleek, contemporary ambiance. To add a touch of opulence, we incorporated rich materials like timber, marble, and natural tones, giving the space a refined, luxurious feel. To further enhance the atmosphere, we integrated warm lighting to create a cosy and inviting environment," mentions Fun.

About the house renovation

The property was initially empty except for a dry kitchen cabinet and an island. The RM350,000 renovation works include the installation of plaster ceilings, carpentry works, electrical wiring, plumbing, furniture selection, and project management. The original layout remains the same, as does the flooring.

“The house includes a private lift and entrance hallway, which we renovated to create a warm and welcoming feel for guests. It is adorned with wall panels and stone feature walls, while the natural textures and bold marble veining of the tile floors and built-ins add a sleek, inviting touch.

To enhance both aesthetics and functionality, we also installed a shoe rack, a mirror, and a plaster ceiling with ambient lighting,” she adds.

Open-plan living area

"Kathy and her family love hosting guests, often inviting friends and relatives from Hong Kong to visit and stay at their holiday home.

We designed the living, dining, and dry kitchen areas to flow seamlessly into one another, facilitating social gatherings while creating a spacious feel," Fun explains.

The living area features a unique accent wall and earthy tones complemented by gilded accents and a luxurious leather sofa. In addition to the thoughtfully designed TV wall, Fun ensured the console is highly functional, incorporating drawers that provide efficient storage for items of various sizes.

The formal dining area features a marble dining table that comfortably seats up to 8 people, harmonising beautifully with the veining of the tile floors. This cohesive design is further enhanced by the tile flooring and wall treatments, which work together to unify the various zones of the space.

Just a few steps away is the dry kitchen, seamlessly connected to the dining area. A dramatic chandelier hangs above the island counter, adding an elegant charm and luxurious touch to the space. This complements the stunning marble island, which not only enhances the kitchen's aesthetic but also meets the functional needs of food preparation when hosting guests.

Wet kitchen

Next to the dry kitchen, a discreet door flush with the wall leads to the wet kitchen.

“Kathy requested a tidy and functional space with ample storage, so we incorporated a smart storage system featuring pull-out baskets to keep the wet kitchen practical and organised.

You can’t see it in the photo, but since the owners enjoys wine tasting as a hobby, we installed a wine chiller in the wet kitchen to enhance the space,” she adds.

Balcony

“The family enjoys playing mahjong in their spare time, so we created a dedicated mahjong area on the balcony, allowing them to enjoy the mountain views and the natural breeze while playing mahjong.

In addition, we designed a cosy chill-out space on the balcony which allows them to lounge in comfort. To keep rainwater out while allowing the owners to enjoy the balcony during inclement weather, we installed a full-height glass window. This design ensures they can stay comfortably on the balcony even when it rains,” she further adds.

Daughter's bedroom

In contrast to the social spaces designed for gatherings, the private quarters of the home were designed with a more restrained approach.

“For the owner’s daughter’s room, we opted for a dark contemporary theme, featuring accent wall elements that add visual interest. The deep tones create a cosy, cocoon-like atmosphere that promotes restful sleep, while the ambient glow from the spherical pendant lights above the custom bedside table and behind the feature wall infuses the room with warmth,” she explains.

Master bedroom

In contrast, the master bedroom features a brighter palette, highlighted by a tan leather bed frame, warm accent lighting, and light brown wooden flooring. The floating bed frame creates a posh, hotel-inspired ambience.

“Since Kathy has an extensive luxury bag collection, we designed a cabinet with glass windows and backlighting, allowing her to store her collection while making it easy to choose the perfect bag for the day,” she adds.

Challenges faced during the renovation

The most challenging part of the renovation, according to Fun, was meeting some of Kathy’s requests.

“For example, Kathy wanted curved design for the built-ins, which couldn’t be achieved with melamine. Instead, we used laminated plywood for the carcass to create the desired shape.

Additionally, she wanted to incorporate strip lighting for ambiance, open-colour carcasses with glass doors for display, quartz countertops and backsplashes, and solid timber strips instead of UPVC fluted panels, which proved to be quite challenging to install,” she explains.

To sum up

“I am very pleased with how this project turned out. Our previous projects primarily involved working on sub-sale landed properties, so tackling a condominium project has been a rewarding new challenge. Unlike other projects that focus heavily on structural, electrical, and masonry work, this renovation emphasises the finer details, such as the selected materials.

In the end, the owners were delighted by the meticulous quality of the renovation. They praised our workmanship, particularly the craftsmanship of the built-ins and other fittings, and expressed their appreciation for the effort we dedicated to the project,” Fun concludes.
