Want to learn how to incorporate the Nordic style into your own space? We asked Amelia, Managing Director and Founder of SMUK Living, to show us the way.

Tip 1 : Keep it simple

Scandinavian interior design is all about simplicity. Therefore, when it comes to furnishing your home, always choose modern furniture that has simple, minimalist designs. Think of well-crafted wooden pieces with smooth and rounded edges, tapered legs (for chairs and tables) symmetrical and clean lines. This type of furniture gives the entire space a cosy content feeling described as hygge in Danish.

Scandinavian design also prides itself on innovative and functional design. So each furniture piece should have a practical or aesthetic purpose that doesn't overtake the room.

Tip 2 : Use warm textiles

The Nordic countries are known for their cold climate. Hence the use of warm textiles is common in a Scandinavian home to stay cosy. These textiles can come in the form of blankets or carpets that are made from wool, sheepskins, leather, cotton, or linen.

Besides blankets and carpets, these warm textiles can be added to a room in many different ways, including furniture, tabletops and cushions. This is a great way of adding texture and interest to a space.

Tip 3: Go neutral

In a typical Scandinavian home, walls, furniture, including floors are often found in a white tone to create bright, airy spaces to counteract the long, dark days of winter. The overall colour scheme should resemble warmth and cosiness.

So when it comes to colour choices, focus on the use of monochromatic and neutral tones such as white, off-white, grey-blue, sage, plush pinks help to create a soothing effect in a room.

Tip 4: Introduce plenty of light

Lighting is a huge part of Scandinavian design, as the Nordic countries get limited hours of natural daylight during the winter. Thus, in every room, there should be multiple light sources, ranging from the warm, low light of a candle to the bright overhead glow of a ceiling light.

Wall sconces, floor lamps and table lamps can also help to illuminate your home, besides creating a warm and cosy ambience to the living space.

Tip 5: Maintain a clutter-free environment

One of the most important characteristics of Scandinavian interior design is making sure that the space is clutter-free. This is what makes the Scandinavian design look aesthetically pleasing, where the “less is more” mantra must be followed to keep a space looking less cluttered and more visually relaxing.

To keep your home clutter-free, make optimal use of storage spaces, and most importantly, be willing to let go of any unnecessary items taking up precious space.

Tip 6: Incorporate organic elements

Light, natural timbers are another must-have in a Scandinavian interior. From furniture to floors, even accent pieces could be timber-toned. Thus, it’s very common to find wooden coffee tables and chairs in a Scandinavian home.

This element is often mixed with metal accents such as brass and copper to help to reduce the bulk and visual weightiness of wooden furnishings, whilst providing a lighter, more reflective balance, for added dimension.
