How to Jazz up Your Home For A Swanky New Year’s Eve Party

December 26, 2017

Itching to host a New Year’s party but afraid that your place isn’t quite ready to receive guests? Don’t fret! We’ve got quick fixes here to solve common design ‘ailments’ and have your home looking fit to host a stunning and memorable holiday party.

• Dining Room

Grownup parties often involve sit-down dinners around a magnificent dining table. So what if your dining table isn’t quite what you’d like it to be? Just dress it up!

Start with an attention-grabbing table cloth – glitzy colours of silver, gold or shimmery white are best for a New Year’s party. Add a centrepiece of flowers and metallic candelabra or simply fill up a large glass bowl with leftover shiny silver Christmas baubles.

Now if your dining table is a little smaller i.e. a four-seater, do a Japanese-style serving around an elongated coffee table with sparkly throw pillows instead; it’s great option for intimate gatherings with fewer guests.

• Living Room

If you have a smaller place and are nervous about hosting more guests, choose the largest common room or area in your home for entertaining; this would typically be the living area.

It’s likely that you will need to move some furniture out and around to accommodate more guests. To open up the space, get your coffee table out of the way and push your sofas at least ten to twenty inches back (where possible) in an ‘L’ or rectangular shape. This should spread the space and give the illusion of more room.

Send hulking furniture into a spare room and set out your dining room chairs instead to create more seating options and better movement space.

• Garden or Outdoors

A garden party can be an exciting way to ring in the New Year, especially if your neighbourhood is in the vicinity of a fireworks display or if you have a pretty garden or pool to show off!

One important part of an outdoor party is lighting. If yours isn’t sufficient, try portable solar garden lamps (which can be inexpensive) for beautiful, gentle ambience.

If you have a little more time, you can string up lantern lights which functions both decoratively and for illumination – also teasing upcoming CNY festivities!

• Lofts and Open Spaces

With lofts and other open layouts, there can be a ‘burden’ of too much space sometimes. Taller ceilings and minimalistic furniture could make a lofty space look bare and depending on the décor theme, less cosy.

An easy fix to cosy up a lofty space is to add a carpet – plush area rugs or even an accent rug or two will instantly add homely warmth. In addition, try dimmer lighting, darker drapes and velvety throw pillows.

You can also create sections for your guests with separate eating areas, drinks carts, lounge spots, etc. to divide and bring in the space even more.
