Dream Home: A ‘Marble-lous’ Modern European Home in Penang
When the homeowners of this 3-storey home situated in a self-contained township of Permai Village, Tanjung Bunga, approached Penang-based interior design firm Nevermore Group, their brief was to create a modern European theme home - inspired by their passion for travelling - with marble features. Beyond these requirements, the homeowner gave the lead designer, Chuah Say Yang and his team free reign over the design scheme.
The biggest challenges of the project, however, were to complete the whole renovation within a short period of six weeks as the homeowners were about to welcome their third-born child into their newly renovated home.

Despite the time constraint, Yang and his team worked swiftly and has successfully turned this 3800 sq ft terrace into a premium living environment filled with luxurious marble accent for the young family in their late 20s. The completed renovation cost RM650,000 including furnishings.
About the design brief
To achieve the desired look, Yang incorporated white marble materials on the coffee table and the floating cabinet countertop that sits under the freestanding TV. The marble goodness does not stop there where marble elements cover the TV wall, creating a striking focal point in the lounge area.

To complement the floor to ceiling marble feature wall, a light grey French panel takes over the opposite side of the wall creating an elegant and clean look. An L-shaped sofa upholstered in dark grey ties the whole look together and provides ample sociable seating for the family of five to lounge in comfort.

To cater to social gatherings, a generous 6-seater marble dining table ensures sufficient seating space for all when family or friends come to visit. Meanwhile, a stunning crystal chandelier adds a glamorous dazzle to the dining area.

Next to the dining table, a bar counter upholstered in glossy ice jade marble creates the biggest visual impact on the open space living room. The gold pendant lights and a Roman arch display shelf brings light and warmth to the neutral scheme, as well as helping to link the room together.

Yang added that muted colours were chosen for the overall design of the lounge area as to allow the ice jade marble and gold trimming feature lighting to stand out among the rest.

Meanwhile, the arch display shelf helps to define separate zones while still keeping them open to one another, yet maintaining a certain degree of privacy.

Moving to the kitchen area, Yang has changed the original layout of the home’s kitchen, expanding its space by knocking down the existing kitchen wall to make a bigger opening. The designer also added a custom arch doorway with glass windows to brighten up the monochrome lounge with natural daylight.

The glass doors are trimmed in black accent to lend an elegant touch to the area, while the custom arch detail softens the look of the room.

Yang has an indisputable eye for detail, which is evident in his choice of colours and customisation. Case in point is the solid brass handles found throughout the kitchen cabinets, sourced from Indonesia.

There are lots of full-height storage cabinets in the kitchen to ensure lots of space to neatly store kitchenwares and appliances.

The marble theme also runs across the kitchen areas with glossy marble white countertop paired with a matching backsplash.

While the social area of the home is dominated by marble elements, the master bedrooms take a more intimate approach with darker tones. A dark brown headboard and black bedside table and chair create a cosy and warm ambience to the bedroom.

On top of that, golden accents on the pendant lights and the table ensure the master bedroom maintains a spark of luxury despite its comfort-centric styling.

To sum up
Yang claimed this home has been a fun and fulfilling project to undertake. And since the homeowner offered minimal creative direction aside from the adjectives “European-theme modern” and “marble,” Yang had the full freedom to propose his idea and create the ultimate dream home for his client.
