Impractical design, questionable reviews

Reviewed by AW・Submitted 13 Nov 2024・ Project completed Apr 2024・Designer Charles Toh

We met ID Charles Toh during one of those ID events. After meeting him, we were impressed by his ‘flow, function and needs’ talk. He also showed us lots of 5 star reviews that he received over the years. Hence we decided to sign with him. Our working experience with him was one that started out well but eventually soured. We found his communication method abrupt and questionable. He usually likes to dump a whole load of photos without further explanation about what he’s trying to convey. He doesn’t articulate clearly about what he’s is trying to say but rather, in a very cryptic manner that leave us confused. He has poor management skills and is very messy in how he manages his various other projects which often led him to be confused. He does not have a backup system in place and says everything is in his phone when his phone crashed. His team of contractors have screwed up so many times that I don’t even want to elaborate any further. A particular situation even had me stuck in the middle of ID blaming vendor first (said product faulty) then blaming contractor and the contractor blaming ID. The design of the house looks great on first sight. However, after living in it, issues started to pop out. 1) ID insisted on a ‘floating bed’ with lights build all around. This means that the surface area for the mattress area is wider than the base. This led to growth of cobwebs despite a weekly cleaning. If I can choose now, I rather have it all the way down to the floor instead of “floating’. ID also did this ‘floating’ cabinet for our tv console area. We have the exact some problem like our bed frame. 2) we requested for a storage bed so ID said he will use good quality hydraulics system. He even went to design something that he said will be able to help our backs when we change our bedsheets. However, ID failed to take into consideration the weight of the mattress. The system he designed is unable to support the weight of a mattress and will fall. So we literally paid alot of money for something that was more useless than the cheap commercial one that we purchased previously. 3) ID pride himself on the lighting system and ‘gifted’ us with smart lighting system. He did not consult us, but only showed it to us after his electrician already installed everything. The lights installed made our house look like a hotel. He installed this lighting track that runs on the top and bottom of all of our bathroom mirrors, all around the house etc. However, the lights ended up hurting our eyes instead due to the way it was installed. We barely even use it now. As for the smart lighting system he ‘gifted us as charity’, it failed multiple times. I had to keep programming the thing non stop. Lastly, I would suggest not to trust those 5* reviews that were written. ID will try to get a perfect review from you by doing more ‘charity’ for you. We had a very unpleasant conversation with him about 2 outstanding issues that were already highlighted to him way before we moved in and he chose not to do anything. Then he asked us to pay more money to settle it and ‘accept the consequences’. In the end the conversation did not end well. The next morning, he sent us a message saying that he is willing to do more ‘charity’ for us, just to get the perfect review from us. This message was like a slap to our face and we chose not to reply. So please be mindful of who you choose. We spent a great deal of money and time on this and if I can turn back time, I will definitely not have chose him.

Classy & Cosy - Hotel style

Reviewed by Gaby・Submitted 7 Feb 2023・ Project completed Nov 2022・Designer Charles Toh

From the moment I had to start the renovation on my 2-rm resale unit, my biggest dilemma was to find a company who can understand my requirements and at the same time, know how to work with the limited space that I have. I took a chance at Home Trust portal and eventually short-listed three companies. De Style was the last quote which I received and eventually signed with. It was the best decision and many thanks to Charles and the team for making my humble home feels like a hotel. It looks classy yet functional. Charles managed my home project impeccably well even with unforeseen delays beyond our control. He will scrutinize minor detail and his eye for design is impressive. The 3D perspective of my unit is exactly what I got in reality. My home journey with Charles has been insightful and I learnt a lot from him too. God Bless

Amazing 3 Room HDB Transformation

Reviewed by Sarah Yang・Submitted 30 Nov 2022・ Project completed Nov 2022・Designer Charles Toh

We are so blessed to have Charles Toh ( of DeStyle) as our ID. Charles has done an excellent job in our very old 3 Room HDB transformation. We are so grateful that he has helped to turn our dream home into a reality. Our house (after renovation) looks very much like the 3D plan and it turns out just the way we planned (highly functional, maximum storage, spacious, and aesthetically pleasing). The efforts Charles has put in to ensure our renovation journey is smooth sailing and the end products meet all our requirements and needs is BEYOND DESCRIPTION. All we can say is things may not turn out the way we wanted them and our dream house may not be materialized if it were not for Charles. WHY? Our flat is a very old HDB flat with some underlying issues and structural restrictions. None of the IDs we interviewed were willing to give it a try to resolve the said issues or restrictions in order to achieve our intended goals. Just to share an example- we wanted to connect 2 washrooms and put a sliding glass door to divide the two. To achieve this, we need to hack away the wall in between the 2 washrooms plus there are a lot of pipes to take care of. None of the IDs we interviewed were willing to try to submit an application to HDB for approval not to mention resolving the said issues and restrictions for connecting both washrooms with a sliding glass door in between. We had interviewed several IDs but found none of them understand or are willing to listen to our needs/ requirements. They just sell what they want to sell. Charles is very DIFFERENT from other ID companies. When we 1st met Charles during our meeting in DeStyle, we were already very impressed by his professionalism, vast knowledge & experience, presentation, ideas, concept, and design. He listened to our needs and requirements patiently, and most of all he has a willing heart to help his clients/ potential clients to resolve their problems so that their goals can be achieved. Throughout the renovation journey, we learned that Charles is an AMAZING problem solver. He is a Product Architect too and is passionate about new technology and product- He has the required knowledge, capability, and competency to resolve a lot of issues and restrictions in our house without which our dream house cannot be materialized and the renovation will not turn out the way we wanted it to be. Charles is responsive in replying to our query/message throughout the entire renovation journey. He visited the job site frequently while the contractors were carrying out the work to ensure everything is done in accordance with the plan. Charles and his team have also done us a BIG favor by helping to expedite the delivery of the renovation so that we can move back to our house much earlier than the agreed delivery timeline- This has helped us save huge additional hotel costs which may be incurred otherwise. Charles never fails to impress us - he is very generous in sharing his knowledge of the new products & technology, also accompanied us to shop for the accessories and shared his view on the pros and cons, etc. There is no project/renovation without any hiccups. We were very pleased with the team’s response and rectifying action whenever there is any problem arose.
