We engaged Andy through a recommendation from a friend, after viewing the quality of his work at their place. Our project goal was to add on 3 built-in cabinet sections to increase storage place in our home for a home business + incoming new baby. The project was done on a pretty tight timeline given that we wanted to complete it ahead of the baby. The 3 sections were: 1) entry way shoe cabinet + dining area floor to ceiling cabinet 2) TV cabinet (floor to ceiling) 3) Master bedroom additional floor to ceiling cabinet Our key requirements were to maximise storage space to fit specific storage box sizes and also to remove clutter. A lot of consideration was put into using sliding doors and ensuring all materials used would enable the cabinets to last. Andy and Yuting handled our requirement gathering really well and transformed them into designs that were practical and space efficient. We relied heavily on their recommendations for design, materials, and also improvements that we weren't aware of. These included repositioning of the ceiling fans and also expanding the TV cabinet designs to include a feature wall and minor storage area to make the cabinet more cohesive with the space. The timeline was executed perfectly. Communications were smooth. During the installation, Andy ensured that everything ran smoothly. It was a busy week for us so we left our house completely to Andy to make sure things were carried out properly, leaving early in the morning and returning late at night. Andy ensured that the furniture were protected, installation work was done properly, and included painting and cleaning of the rooms after the installation so that we didn't have to worry about anything at all. Post-installation, Andy followed up closely on any touch-up works required. After putting our new cabinets through their paces, we found that we could better optimise the storage by adding additional storage planks, which Andy quickly coordinated for us. Would highly recommend Andy and his team for a worry-free renovation, especially if you are working on a tight timeline, have a busy schedule, and also have kids :)

Renovation Journey

Reviewed by Eunice Leong・Submitted 13 Sep 2022・ Project completed May 2022・Designer Andy Chen

We engaged Andy for our first home renovation because we were comfortable with him. He is genuine and evidently passionate about helping us create a home through his presentations and initial meet ups. He patiently explained about what can or cannot be done when it comes to carpentry and glassworks. Our first home project was well done and Andy's after sales service is good. After handover, whenever our lights or aircon piping had issues due to wear and tear, he proactively sent help, oversaw and followed through with the repair process. Naturally, we engaged Andy once more when we bought our second home. He looked into finer details which we never thought of, for e.g. creating a curved edge TV console, so it is child-friendly without betraying its aesthetic quality. Throughout the different aspects of renovation works and items purchased, he ensures we keep to our budget and ensures our home retains style and homeliness. Additionally, Andy is realistic when it comes to keeping timelines and budgeting, he helped us make informed and practical decisions when we purchased furniture or toilet fittings, he kept us updated weekly on renovation works. Through our journey, he has turned from ID to family friend.

E Interior Studio was highly recommended by my boss after Andy did the renovation for his place years ago. I decided to give it a try, so I sent Andy my floorplan with some indications of what I felt like doing for my place. I remember on the first meeting, he went above and beyond, coming to the meeting with 3d model and samples to share with me his idea of how my house can turn out. His attentiveness to details and willingness to go beyond his scope of works is what made us decide to go with him. During the reno, his team’s constant updates and communication helped us understand the flow of works and the necessary things that we have to look out for. Despite his busy schedule at times, he will make sure that he ensures a high level of consistency and workmanship, taking pride in every part of the project he delivers. I will highly recommend Andy and his team to new owners especially, it is very difficult to find a designer like him who will take time to go through the various elements of the reno and explaining the pros and cons of material etc.

A good partnership

At the beginning of my interaction with Andy, he start off by getting to know my needs and my style. Brought me to many showrooms to understand the materials that I like and dislike. Truly appreciate that. I did my reno during the pandemic period where there were a lot of delays from the supplier side. However Andy press on to see through all works to completion. Works are of good quality. There were hiccups here and there, but when I sound out, he does not hesitate to rectify it. Overall, I enjoyed the process of my reno. Thank you!

Professionalism, reliable, responsible, trustworthy, patient, and knowledgeable.

It has been a very pleasant renovation experience with chief designer, Andy, and his assistant, Yuting. As a disclaimer, Andy is my brother but that actually worries me in the beginning as there the saying goes, never hire a family member as emotions are involved, things might turn sour and the relationship could be affected, but knowing how passionate he is about the Design & Build industry which translates to the huge amount of pride he takes in doing his job and the strong integrity he possessed, I decided to take the chance. There are no regrets. Andy is the overall in-charged for the whole renovation project. Traits displayed were professionalism, reliable, responsible, trustworthy, patient, and knowledgeable. It is a new condo so therefore work starts with the defects check. Andy’s trained eye and experience helped to spot defects I would have easily missed, and helped liaised with the developer’s main contractor’s foreman to get the defects fixed in my absence. As a result of good EQ and people management skills, the defects were cleared quicker then expected. The design process started with a meeting to understand my needs and requirements. A clear idea of Andy’s design was communicated with 3D rendered pictures and Yuting, being proficient with the software, was able to alter the design on the spot, according to my preference for decision-making. After confirmation of the design, the timeline of the renovation was set up and make known to me so I could track the progress, as well as plan for the delivery of furniture. Due to the nature of my job, I spend a huge part of time overseas and Andy was on-site as many times as it takes to ensure work were progressing as planned. My opinion and approval were always sought before solutions for issues encountered were executed so there was no surprise. Throughout the whole process, I was bombarding Andy with all kinds of questions, including the appropriate color/dimension of furniture, I would have got myself irritated but he has always responded with patience and insightful information. With all the horror stories related to unreliable ID companies, I am very thankful that mine has been a very pleasant and an enjoyable renovation journey, without hidden cost or surprises, with one of First Dot Design’s chief designer, Andy, at the helm, assisted by Yuting. I would recommend First Dot Design to anyone who are looking for a pleasant experience with a reliable ID company. Design: A good design to me is when aesthetic meets functionality. Limited space is an issue that I wish to manage by requesting for a small TV console in the living room and full wall length storage in the study room. He took up the challenges and obstacles posed by my every requirement in stride and brainstormed to meet them all, without trying to convince me with a solution that is convenient for his team to carry out. One aspect that made working with Andy enjoyable was how he would share his proposed design, listens and incorporates my inputs, working together with me to develop a final solution that would achieve my renovation goals. By doing this, it allows the design to truly meet my needs and something that is uniquely mine. An example of attention paid to the design can be seen from the different way the cabinet doors opened in the study room with the usage of different door hinges (eg, Blum Aventos HL system) for ease of use. As I wish to retain the usage of the room as a study, one of the doors opens up to form the table with the used of heavy-duty hinges. I have to give recognition to Andy’s effort to make it a point to produce an original design for every one of his clients. There was an incident where one of his client saw and really like a set of cabinet doors he designed for me, so he approached me for approval for the other client to use the same design, when he didn’t need to. Workmanship: Andy pays a lot of attention to the quality of workmanship and therefore demands a high level of standard from his employees. He does not hesitate to replace any part of the fabrication produced by his employees that is not up to his high standard. It is comforting to know that he does a first cut review of the work to ensure quality before my inspection. Service: Good and reliable renovation services is something difficult to buy even if one pays good money and it is what I am receiving (yes, because I am still receiving any advises/assistance from Andy, as and when required, despite having taken over the completed project) from First Dot Design. This is the added value one gets from a man who is passionate in his career. Value for Money: First dot design is definitely value for money without a doubt. I cannot ask for more then a peace of mind with Andy taking charged of the project, keeping me updated with the renovation progress every step of the way, highlighting any issues and proposing a solution, sticking with the planned timeline, etc. First Dot Design does not believe in price war with other companies, but aspires to provide products and services to meet expectations for the amount their clients pay for.
