Thankfully, you can recreate those posh vibes in your own home, guaranteeing five-star indulgence all year round. Blaine Robert, CEO and Creative Director of Blaine Robert Design Sdn Bhd, offers some tips on how to transform your abode into a luxury hotel-inspired space. His varied background has led him to create some of the most lavish interiors for commercial and residential projects such as the Four Seasons Hotel and Residences, the Dorsett Hotel, the Ritz-Carlton Residences and the NAZA TTDI, KL Metropolis Sales Gallery.

1. Set the tone with a spectacular entrance

Entryways are often overlooked because they are so small; but hotels know the importance of making you feel pampered (yet at the same time, right at home) from the moment you step in. So think about how you can create a "wow" feeling when entering a room. It can be in the form of statement artworks, a crystal chandelier, a vase or a mirror. These features can add a sense of grandeur to a room but at the same time, are still very welcoming.

You should also add smart storage solutions by the entrance to neatly store all of your belongings for a tidy and uncluttered look, Blaine suggests.

2. Style your living room in a way that's exquisite, but also relaxing

The living room should echo the sense of luxury that you’ve begun to instill at the entrance. This can be achieved through layered lighting. “Use soft and subdued overall lighting to make you feel relaxed and strategically placed eyeball lighting on the ceiling to illuminate the space,” Blaine recommends.

“You can also use accent featured lighting throughout the room to enhance corners, soft finishings and artwork,” Blaine added.

Another feature that most five-star hotels have in common is a cohesive colour scheme. Whether you choose understated neutrals or bold design statements, make sure that there’s a consistent colour palette to create flow throughout the house. The overall colour scheme should be considered holistically; from wall coverings to wardrobe finishes, linens and flooring, according to Blaine.

Wallcoverings are used extensively in luxury hotels as they add textural interest and depth to a space. If you are feeling daring, you might want to consider extending your wallpaper ideas to the ceiling, as seen in this living room. The gorgeous textured wallpaper adds visual dimension and helps to set an elegant atmosphere while zoning the room.

To complete the room, “furnish your living space with low-profile furnishings to promote comfort and relaxation," he adds.

3. Set up an opulent dining room fit for royalty

All luxury hotels have elegant dining areas. If you want to replicate the same effect in your house, Blaine recommends, “adding a striking statement artwork to identify each area of interest”. In this dining area, he placed a stunning piece of artwork that draws attention while also bringing some colour to the room. Lighting is also important in a dining room. Consider installing a chandelier as seen in this dining room to complement the area.

Similar to luxury hotels, your dining area should feature soft and luxurious window treatments that fit the room's aesthetic. Blaine used black sheer curtains with beige drapes to complement the dining room's decor and furnishings.

High-end hotels are also all about complete air conditioning, so make sure there is plenty of it throughout the house. It removed the need for ceiling fans, reducing visual clutter.

4. Create a bedroom atmosphere that promotes deep relaxation and sleep

The bed is unquestionably the focal point of every luxury hotel room. If you want to achieve this look at home, investing in a stylish bed frame is essential. Blaine designed a bespoke built-in headboard in this bedroom, positioned in the centre to create balance around it. He also added bedside pendant lamps and drawers to add to the space's symmetry.

One of the finest parts of staying in a luxurious hotel is checking into your hotel room after a long day of travelling and settling into crisp, clean linens. Blaine recommends investing in white linen or the best quality sheets you can afford for your bedroom and always keep them looking clean and pristine at all times. You should also think about investing in high-quality mattresses that provide proper ergonomic support and comfort that you can sink into for a well-deserved good night's rest.

The colour scheme you select for your bedroom can have a surprisingly large impact on your mood and sleep quality. Blaine recommends adopting a soft and warm colour palette in bedrooms to provide a calming effect and encourage sleep or relaxation.

A luxury hotel bedroom is never messy or unmanageable, therefore the more storage areas available for you to stash things away, the better, according to Blaine. So install as much storage space as possible in your bedroom, where you can hide all of your belongings.

Every luxury hotel also has its own signature scent. To create a wonderfully welcoming ambience in your bedroom, Blaine suggests adding some signature scent in the shape of a diffuser or candle for a hotel-like sensory pleasure.

5. Design a spa-like bathroom that will relieve all of your stress

The hotel bathroom is an oasis of calm, a place to relax and unwind after a long day. The soothing effect is partly due to the lack of clutter. So when designing a luxury-hotel-inspired bathroom, Blaine suggests integrating bathroom storage to hide away clutter. Hotel bathrooms also do not have shelves full of trinkets, so pare down your bathroom and only display the necessities.

Your bathroom lighting is also important. It is key to establishing a cosy and intimate atmosphere. “Strong artificial lighting is vital for practical daily activities,” he says, “while soft and warm accent bathroom lighting is ideal to shift the mood and set the right ambience in your bathroom when the time is right.”
