9 Smart Storage Solutions That Every Home Needs!

April 1, 2021

There's no such thing as too much storage space. But not all homeowners are blessed with a large space to add massive closets or built-in cabinetry in their home. Luckily there are plenty of other creative ways to store all your essentials, if you know where to find them.

Here, we have come up with some smart storage solutions to help you make the most of your home's existing space and to keep your home looking neat and organized!

1. Mount your bicycles on the wall

Bicycles take up a lot of space, especially in an apartment building that doesn’t come with a dedicated bike area. So why not consider mounting them on a wall? When you have a stylish, minimalist wall mount, even bikes can double as wall decor!

2. Install hooks by the entrance door

Here’s a space you definitely don’t use but definitely should: the space behind your entrance door. A hook fastened to the wall behind the front door is also a great way to maximize space. Here, you can hang umbrellas, school bags, handbags or scarfs once you reach home instead of leaving them on the table (or the floor) which creates unpleasant visual clutter.

3. Add cabinets or shelves under the stairs

Underneath the stairs is another area that’s often overlooked but has huge storage potential. Take design inspiration from this double-storey home that features a custom-built glass cabinet with a wine chiller that allows the homeowner to store and display various items including glassware or dinnerware instead of taking up kitchen cabinet space.

4. Install drawers underneath your bed frame

If your bedroom is not blessed with a huge space, you can create extra storage space by installing a custom-made platform bed. The space under your bed can be used for storing spare blankets, bed sheets or clothes so you don’t have to waste a whole corner of your bedroom for a massive wardrobe!

5. Install a shower alcove

For small bathrooms, you can consider installing a shower alcove. It allows you to store shower necessities that are within easy reach while eliminating the need for obtrusive storage options that would interrupt the overall design flow of the shower area.

6. Use a pegboard to hang items vertically

Pegboard is a useful feature to keep things organised without taking up any floor space. Take design inspiration from this bedroom, where Surface R mounted a matte black pegboard on the wall that allows the owner to hang his school bags, skates, and music equipment instead of leaving them on the floor. The pegboard storage solution even looks super cool as a feature wall!

7. Use your sofa as shelf space

The sofa is going to take up space anyway so why not get one that comes with storage space. Take design inspiration from this landed home where MIL Design & Construction installed a wooden sofa that comes with attached shelving, so the homeowner will get some extra storage space out of it.

Take design cues from this modern home where Cube Creation has installed a custom-built room divider by the home’s entrance door that separates the entryway area and the stairs. It is also used for displaying vases, potted plants and home decor so the homeowner doesn’t have to splurge on a bulky display unit.

9. Use your kitchen island as an extra storage space

A kitchen island can take up the bulk of space in your kitchen, but you can still have them without having to compromise. Simply add built-in shelves or drawers in your kitchen island for extra storage while keeping your kitchen essentials within easy reach.
