This Minimalist Home in Selangor Finds Beauty in Simplicity
It's impossible to deny the serenity and simple beauty of a minimalist interior, hence when the homeowners of this 3-bedroom condominium in Saujana Impian collected the keys to their brand new apartment, they turned to an award-winning interior design firm, Surface R to transform their home into a minimalist haven.
With an RM150,000 renovation budget, the homeowners approached the Surface R after seeing one of their past projects featured in a magazine publication. This gives them the confidence to entrust the firm to renovate their 3-bedroom condo.
Chew Yee, who led the design process on this project created an ideal home as envisioned by the homeowners. To achieve a minimalist look, Chew Yee infuses Scandi colour schemes such as white, light grey and pale blue throughout the home to make the entire living space feel light, bright, clean and welcoming.
Chew Yee also chooses to infuse different earthy materials to bring in warmth to the home. “Natural and basic form is the most important part of our design process. Hence, you will notice that the house features simple, clean design such as brick walls, wooden shelves, and wooden flooring,” shares the designer.
The combination of these textures and natural finishes add depth and play up an earthy comfort to the living room. It features whitewashed brick walls, furniture with clean lines, while the glass windows with sheer white drapes shower the space with a warm glow of sunlight.
The herringbone pattern wood floor is particularly eye-catching. It adds character to the space and the wood tone matches the dining table, the ceiling fan and the built-in TV console cabinets to create one cohesive visual through the open plan living space.
Above the dining table, two hanging hemp rope lighting fixtures draw the eye to travel upwards. A neon installation that reads, "Enjoy Life, It's Delicious" becomes a focal point in the dining area and sets a casual tone for the rest of the apartment.
Next to the dining table is a small and cosy dry kitchen, fitted with white glossy built-in cabinets and glossy black subway tile backsplash. These reflective surfaces catch light to create the illusion of a bigger space.
Wood elements even carry into the home’s master bedroom, where the herringbone pattern door and frame make a grand statement when seen across the hallway.
True to their minimalist spirit, the master bedroom features light grey walls to create a calming effect for rest and relaxation. To maximise space, Chew Yee installed a wooden built-in bed frame that linked together with the side tables to create a cohesive look. Meanwhile, built-in open shelves offer much-needed additional storage space and keep clutter at bay.
The designer also opted for blinds instead of heavy drapes or curtains to make the master bedroom feel bright and spacious.
Besides the master bedroom, Chew Yee has transformed one of the guest bedrooms into a nursery that features a soothing light blue wall. The nursery is furnished with a simple white baby cot, white armchair and white blinds. Natural materials, such as a wooden floor evoke a cosy and intimate feel to the room.
Completed within 12 weeks, the Chew Yee noted that renovating a home in a new township and condo or service apartment within a limited time frame has always been a challenging task to undertake but a rewarding experience for her and her team.
