This Open Concept Bungalow Took 4 Years to Renovate

October 6, 2020

“This is a self-build bungalow project. Every design started from an empty land. This is why we name the house as ‘The White Canvas’,” says Joey Ng, of EE Design Studio, the interior designer of this gorgeous three-storey 10,354 sq ft home that took approximately four years to from scratch until completion to renovate.

Qanvast (Q): Tell us about the design brief: What was the homeowner’s request for their home?

Joey (J):: This bungalow is owned by a married couple in their 30s. The goal of the home’s interior renovation was to create a clean, modern, airy and bright setting. Since the homeowners have two young children, we kept the design family-friendly and practical throughout.

Q: Can you describe to us the design of this home?

J: The main concept for the house is ‘less is more’. We did an open layout for the common space (located on the middle storey) for movement flow, and segregated certain areas through clever furniture placement and varying floor and ceilling heights.

For instance, the ground floor living room features a double ceiling with floor to ceiling glass windows that draw in the sky as a constantly changing painting and allow plenty of sunlight to enter the space.

Q: What was the main inspiration behind this design concept?

J: Being an art collector, the client had years of art collectibles, and that led to the design inspiration of creating a minmalistic gallery-like space at home to showcase these pieces.

J: The homeowners love to entertain and host gatherings hence the open layout continues into the dining and kitchen too. However, they are particular about privacy issues, and hence, we soundproofed the walls at the entertainment area.

The coolest part is, the entertainment area is situated on the ground floor, with a direct access to the garage so guests can enter their home without intruding the privacy of other family members in the house.

The children’s bedrooms, the master bedroom, the living room and kitchen are all located on the middle storey. Meanwhile, guest bedrooms are found on the top floor along with a gym area, family hall, and a rooftop veranda.

Q: Did you encounter challenges during the renovation process?

J: The homeowners had a hard time choosing the materials for their master bathroom. In the end, they went with marble, which turns out to be amazing! It also took us some time to find the ‘right’ marble with the right colour and unique character that we want to achieve.

Q: What are your thoughts on the final result on this project?

J: We are very satisfied with the outcome of this home renovation. So far, our client (the husband) hasn’t received any complaints from his wife and children whenever he throws parties during the weekend.

Meanwhile, his wife enjoys when preparing meals in the kitchen as she can oversee her kids playing at the corner, thanks to the open layout.
