As the owners wanted a more spacious home for their growing family, the designer incorporated an open layout by opening up the original layout (with many small rooms) and extending the internal space into the former yard. At the same time, the designer introduced natural light (a fundamental aspect of zen-inspired homes) and greenery to brighten up the home.

One of the defining elements of this home is a tree that spans upward to create a vertical connection with the upper levels. Rooted on the ground floor, the tree merges with a long counter that begins at a raised platform within an internal courtyard resembling a Japanese chabudai before extending horizontally to form the dining table. The greenery stands out against the bare white walls and promotes stress relief while eliminating toxins from the air and lending a powerful connection to nature.

The heart of the home is an open-concept living room, which connects the living, dining, and working areas into a single open space. Natural materials such as bamboo, paper, and wood are prevalent in the built-ins, window treatments, and lighting fixtures.
