IKEA Designer Dupes + Collabs to Jazz up Your Space on a Budget

Affordable statement pieces

Designer furniture pieces can cost a fortune, but here’s how you can get the look for less by shopping at IKEA.

While IKEA is known for affordable furniture, not many know that the brand actually collaborates with famous designers for special collections; there are also other designer dupes (or pieces ‘inspired by iconic designer ones’, depending on how kind you are).

Designer Dupes

1. TALLBYN Table Lamp

For only $59, you can add a little nostalgia to the rooms of your home as this lamp looks like the famous unique Louis Poulsen 2/1 Table Lamp worth $1,427 (but dupe) — which is the innovative three-shade system Poul Henningsen created in the 1920s. Although the IKEA version doesn’t provide you with a three-shade system, it surely adds a statement piece to your home nonetheless: something you can boast to your friends about. It also comes in other variations, such as a floor lamp and pendant lamp with 3 lamps.

At such a competitive price point, the materials used differ slightly. For example, the base and stem for TALLBYN Table Lamp is nickel-plated whereas the Louis Poulsen 2/1 Table Lamp is made of bright chrome plated brass.

2. NYMANE Floor/reading lamp

Standing out for its fluidity in range of movement, the NYMANE Floor/reading lamp closely resembles the Marset Polo Floor Lamp designed by Joan Gaspar worth about $1,385. At just $69, those who really want it to look like the Marset Polo can consider a DIY spray paint job to turn it black, and it’s as close as it gets.

Its minimalist look plus adjustable arm, head and its ability to provide direct light makes it such a functional statement piece. Its thin-like structure doesn’t take up too much space and it’s perfect for reading nooks and study corners.

3. REGOLIT Pendant Lamp Shade

So cheap and stylish? This handmade REGOLIT Pendant Lamp Shade (white) is highly comparable to the Akari 45A Ceiling Lamp, designed by Isamu Noguchi in the 1950s that seamlessly combines Japanese handcraft with modernist form.

The Akari Ceiling Lamp’s $250 price tag can be attributed to its use of handmade washi paper and bamboo ribbing, supported by a robust metal frame. In contrast, the $4 dupe opts for a more economical choice, relying solely on rice paper. If you’re on a budget, you can get this look-alike and achieve a warm and inviting ambience in your home, casting a soft glow that diffuses throughout the space.

4. BALTSAR Swivel Chair

Available in black and white, this BALTSAR Swivel Chair closely resembles the Chair Champagne by Erwine & Estelle Laverne for Formes Nouvelles which was popular back in the 1950s. Its bowl-shaped seat and rounded shape backrest look almost identical to the Chair Champagne, with its biggest difference being the materials used.

The IKEA version is still undoubtedly comfortable and eye-catching. It’s also functional; although it doesn’t have the automatic reverse mechanism, it’s still easy to turn if someone wants to get up. Cop the dupe if you’re not willing to splurge on the designer piece because it does give the same vibes, just with less function.

5. EKENASET Armchair

Closely resembling the Hans Wegner GE-290 Lounge Chairs designed in 1953, these EKENASET Armchairs offer a budget-friendly alternative while capturing the same aesthetic. Available in various colours reminiscent of the Hans Wegner chairs, they come at $369.

Unlike many of IKEA’s other wood-based pieces, this armchair wood frame is made of solid wood rather than plywood. The ergonomic design features an angled backrest, providing a comfortable sitting position, while the tall legs in solid wood not only enhance the aesthetics but also make it convenient for vacuuming or reaching items underneath the chair.

6. FROSET Easy Chair

The FROSET Easy Chair, available in three distinct colours: black, red, and white stained oak veneer, can add a touch of comfort to your home. The chair's design focuses on geometry, featuring a spacious and gently curved seat, a rounded backrest, and an angle between them to ensure a relaxed and comfortable sitting experience.

Its timeless and stylish Scandinavian design closely mirrors the GE 1935 Easy Chair designed by Hans Wegner in 1948. Crafted with smart manufacturing techniques, it comes at a fraction of the cost, allowing you to elevate your home's style without breaking the bank.

However, it's essential to note the quality difference, as IKEA employs plywood/wood veneers, while Hans Wegner chairs boast a construction of solid wood. Not to mention, there's a difference in the joinery workmanship between the two, with the Hans Wegner Chair exhibiting a more seamless finish than IKEA’s.

The perfect addition to a mid-century modern home. This surfboard-style STOCKHOLM coffee table, with a walnut veneer table top and legs in solid walnut, imparts a warm, natural feeling to your home. Resembling the designer piece (the Mid-Century Modern Surfboard Style coffee table by Henredon in the 1960s), it includes an additional woven shelf beneath the tabletop for convenient storage of small items like magazines and books.

Make this coffee table the standout piece in your home and save some extra cash while doing so.

IKEA launched the viral VARMBLIXT collection, in partnership with a Rotterdam-based designer Sabine Marcelis, who has worked with the likes of Céline and Isabel Marant. It features a playful collection of 20 pieces that steal the spotlight with quirky sculptural lighting, one-of-a-kind serveware and vibrant rugs. However, only 3 items were kept long-term in IKEA range — the VARMBLIXT LED table/wall lamp (orange glass/round), VARMBLIXT LED wall lamp (white metal/circle) and the VARMBLIXT LED wall/mirror lamp (dimmable/bronze-colour round).

The most popular mention is the VARMBLIXT LED table/wall lamp (orange glass/round): its flawlessly endless donut design allows for versatile use, whether showcased on a table or mounted on a wall. When the light filters through the orange glass, it bathes the donut-shaped structure in a cosy and radiant glow. Perfect for any home setting.

The more noticeable piece, the SINNERLIG LED table & pendant lamp, is an iconic product that remains highly valued and continues to be a beloved fixture in today's IKEA selection. Its handwoven bamboo gives a warm, welcoming glow and creates decorative light patterns in your home. The best part? You can adjust the light intensity by simply turning the knob, instantly transforming the mood of the room.
