MUJI Just Launched Its Rubberwood Furniture Line, and We’re Obsessed!

Calling all Nipponphiles!

From fashion to homeware and oishii eats, it’s no secret that Singaporeans are fans of all things Japanese. It goes without saying that the distinctive MUJI aesthetic has always been a hit with discerning homeowners too – what’s not to love about the tastefully minimalist look?

So, you can imagine our delight to find out that the Japanese lifestyle brand has introduced its newest furniture series made of rubberwood.

But first, what is rubberwood?

As its name suggests, rubberwood is derived from rubber trees grown primarily for latex and chopped down when they stop producing sap (after approx. 30 years). In this vein, rubberwood is a byproduct that makes it cheaper and more environmentally friendly than other traditional wood options like oak.

But unlike rubber, rubberwood is not in any way soft and elastic. It is, in fact, a hardwood that is solid and durable with a medium density similar to ash and maple wood. Appearance wise, rubberwood is light in colour, which gives it the flexibility to take on a variety of stains and finishes.

So, without further ado, here are our top picks from this range of durable, versatile and timeless furniture range:

1. Wooden Storage Bed (from $799)

MUJI furniture

With homes getting more compact in size, you’ll want to maximise every inch of space. And given the floor area our beds occupy, it makes sense that we get them to pull double duty by opting for a storage bed that comes with pull-out drawers.

MUJI furniture

Available in all standard sizes from Single to King, the Wooden Storage bed from MUJI is useful for storing everyday clothes, as well as seldom-used or bulky items such as luggages, comforters, and beddings.

If you’re all for a consistent look and feel, pair it with the Wooden Chest Drawers (from $389) for additional storage space in your bedroom.

2. Highback Reclining Sofa ($309)

A perennial favourite of MUJI fans, the Highback Reclining Sofa is now available in rubberwood as well.

What we like best about the personal sofa is its reclining function – where both the back and head rests can be adjusted to your desired angle – with six positions to choose from for maximum comfort. Looking to curl up with a good book? A quick snooze? Netflix and chill? The Highback Reclining Sofa’s got your back, literally.

Plus, customisation is possible as well with 2 fabric options, cotton canvas or basket weave, to choose from for your sofa cover. The cotton canvas fabric is available in beige and brown, while the basket weave alternative comes in beige or charcoal. While you’re at it, get a matching ottoman ($149) for good measure!

3. Wooden Frame Sofa (from $699)

Available in three popular configurations (2-, 2.5- and 3-Seater), the Wooden Frame Sofa is ideal for adding warmth and cosiness to your living area.

Made wholly from sturdy rubberwood, its frame features four main parts that are easy to transport and assemble. And if you’re a couch potato, you’ll also appreciate the deep seats and cushy cushions that are perfect for all-day lounging.

Pro-tip: low-height sofas like this make interiors look more spacious, something that’s much needed in small homes!

4. Dining Table (from $279)

Looking for versatile, space-saving furnishings? You know you can count on the Japanese for that.

Combining the best of both worlds, the Wooden Extension Table boasts a compact length of 90cm when folded in, and can be extended out to 120cm when the occasion calls for it, like when you have guests over for dinner.

For a coherent aesthetic, pair it with complementary rubberwood chairs ($129 each) or benches (L Size at $159 each) in the range.

5. Workstation must-haves

Whether it’s you working from home, or your kids doing their homework, an efficient workstation configuration is a must for productivity.

MUJI furniture

Set up one easily by combining MUJI’s Wooden Desk ($339) with the matching mobile Wooden Desk Cabinet ($269) – which can be neatly tucked under the table when not in use – and detachable Desk Top Shelf ($89) for added storage space.

Should you need even more storage space, stacking shelves (from $169) are also available.

MUJI furniture

But if all you’re looking for is a solid desk to work with in a really tight space (say, if you have multiple people at home each needing your own workstation), the Wooden Compact Desk ($199) would be your best bet. Simple, functional and stylish – check, check and check!
