Rejoice: 7 Dreamy Pinterest Ideas That Actually Work in HDBs

Oh, Pinterest. We love it as much as the next homeowner, but with so many eye-catching interior ideas, the temptation to want everything (yep, even this gorgeous wallpapered toilet) is real.

Unfortunately (or not), HDB flats don't always make the ideal canvases for bringing those ideas to life. Well, not always, but not impossible! While we may not be blessed with high ceilings, big windows or the ability to completely modify our spaces (pesky regulations), these 7 Pinterest trends can still be achieved, even in an HDB flat:

1. Terrazzo, Terrazzo

One of Pinterest’s biggest décor trends in 2018, retro-hip terrazzo surfaces are a hit with homes everywhere, HDBs included. These eye-catching, speckled stone surfaces – ranging from timeless greys to patinas of all spectrum of the rainbow – can be incorporated on floors, kitchen countertops or even bathroom tiles for a fun, visual highlight. But if you’re looking for something subtle, there’s always the option of smaller décor items like terrazzo vases or trays.

2. Copper Backsplashes

Bringing a luxurious (but gritty) sheen, metal backsplashes add a different twist to the usual glass/subway tile backsplash configuration. And nope, they aren’t just confined to your Pinterest feed – here, a copper sheet backsplash steals the show in this open-plan BTO kitchen. Its brushed, stained finish serves a practical purpose too, helping to mask any stains or dirt, while matching copper handles and blue-grey cabinets complete the look.

3. That Bohemian, Jungalow Style

The hippie look has never been more coveted, no thanks to Pinterest and Instagram. And the reason behind its skyrocketing popularity with local (and overseas) homeowners alike could be in part due to its easygoing style, which is a breeze to achieve. Think white walls, an open-concept layout, wooden/rattan furnishings and plants…tons of plants. Oh, and don’t forget some ethnic influences for a globetrotting look, like a Turkish-style rug or a leather ottoman.

4. All Things Pink

A colour that once conjured up images of baby bedrooms and Hello Kitty, pink has since shed its girly roots, making a comeback as the go-to, complementary shade of the moment. Whether it’s on sofas, feature walls, doors or cabinets, rosy pinks match surprisingly well with all sorts of interior styles, giving any space a vibrant, edgy look. A welcome change, we think, to the usual white/black themes that are commonplace everywhere.

5. Farmhouse Chic

Maybe we all secretly wished we could live in a huge, countryside cottage. Or maybe, its those gorgeous photos of shaker-style kitchens and shiplap walls popping up on your feed that’s to blame. The modern farmhouse look is still in, and thankfully, there’s no need to live in an actual farm to get the same look. Take cues from this HDB in Bukit Batok, which nails the look to a tee with faux beams, slatted wood panels and rustic furnishings.

6. The 'Wes Anderson' Look

Seen this trending décor style popping up in the latest cafes, boutiques (or Pinterest boards) you’ve visited, but don't know what it’s called? We don’t either - but we'll call it the 'Wes Anderson' look, inspired by the dreamy, symmetrical sets often used in the filmmaker's works. Soft, polished and minimal-looking at times, the aesthetic (surprisingly) works in HDB apartments too. Here, a resale flat in Bukit Batok proves just that, featuring arched ceilings, concealed curved doors and rounded elements for an arresting space that looks more art gallery than home.

7. Fancy Tiling

Once upon a time, we were all pretty much content with our boring white tiles and floors. Now? Whether it’s ogling at a gorgeous tile combination or obsessing over that to-die-for interlocking tile in sage green, Pinterest has ruined our tiling expectations for life. Don’t worry though, with local suppliers like Hafary serving up a comprehensive variety of tile patterns and shapes, achieving the perfect ‘creeping’ floor or standout bathroom in your HDB is no longer a pipe dream.
